We've learned how to use this computer stuff... and you're asking about the mirror? Come on..

I'm baffled at how many people there are that underestimate the intelligence of animals. I not only had a cat that recognized itself, but along with our German Shepherd would utilize the mirror above the bed to see what was going on outside the window it relected! When they saw Daddy's car coming down the driveway via the mirror, they high tailed off the bed to greet him!

Definitely YES. & contrary to what lots of other people have observed, (& I'm sure it's true in their case, as all cats are different), my kitty never freaked out when she saw herself--thinking it was another cat--or even sniffed the mirror, but she clearly saw herself. In fact, when I'm in "my" bathroom where she loves brushes & hand mirrors & so on, she will look into the mirror at MY image & talk to me. Like--you might look directly at a person's reflection, not at them, & speak while looking at the reflection. She knows perfectly well who she is in the mirror, & who I am. The male cat I had before, never even glanced at a mirror. (Like some cats actually like to watch TV & some couldn't care less?) A resounding YES. But all cats are not the same, in many, many ways!

Some can. I had a cat who use to get a fright all the time when she'd see herself in the mirror and want to fight "the other cat". However, our new one got a fright the first time, went and sniffed and now sits often looking at herself in the mirror.

Funny you should ask this! I read an article about this very topic just a few days ago. The link can be found in "sources" below. In short, no, they cannot. I remember being amused when my kitten used to "puff up" and attack her image in a mirror. She is now used to seeing that "other" cat and ignores her. :-)

some do, some do not. I have 3 cats. one is rather stupid and by no potential realized that the cat that she hisses at contained in the mirror is herself and the different 2 realized it immediately away and forget concerning the mirror.

In my experience, most cats don't even pay attention to the reflection in the mirror. I've always wondered if they can even see it clearly. But then, one day I brought my cat home from the vet and while he was still doped up, he hissed at and tried to attack his own reflection. So maybe they can see the reflection and just ignore it.

not when there little. My cat was looking at my mirror which is a sliding door closet and went inside the closet to look for "the other cat" (her reflexion) but now she kinda know that its her....(and she used to hunch her back and get close to attack...the jumped...attacked herself and run away...) very funny!

According to more than one book (but probably not two) on cats I've read recently, no.

The disinterest in mirrors purportedly may have something to do with smell.

Poor things. It makes it awfully hard for them to shave.

My Sophie does. Either that or she thinks there's an extremely beautiful cat in the house that she loves to look at.
