I have 2 Sail Finned Mollies. one is chasing the other one round the tank. He/she is also doing some sort of dance around the other one. His/hers fins are fully opened and he/she is swimming round the other one. the other one points up towards the top of the tank and seems to bend to the side when this is happening. Also how do you tell the sex of Tiger

Is it true that you cat people don't like atheists?

Because that's what they are saying over in the Religion and Spirituality section.

OK...there are so many people that feel that EVERY puppy/kitten takes the home away from animals already in shelters and forces the death of those animals.

SOOOO...what are we to do when presented with pregnant dogs and cats that are going to give birth to unwanted litters??? Many of us shout SPAY THEM ASAP!!!! BUT...many of you people so against breeding and you want people to think of the shelter animals say DON'T SPAY THEM!!

So why the conflict? Animals have no thoughts on "aborting" a pregnancy. Why would it be wrong to abort a pregnancy that WILL IN FACT impact a shelter????

I have a male ferret that I suspect was abused before we got him. Found out afterward he'd been returned a month after being bought. Anyway, he's biting. And not nipping. I'm pretty sure the bitters won't work in this case. He's bitten me twice and drawn blood both times. A lot of it. Once on my finger (he'd messed in the corner so I was going to give him the 'no speech' and toss him in the cage) and he snapped when I went to pick him up. and the second time was just no. He hadn't done anything wrong and I was just holding him (which we do all the time) and he nuzzled around for a second and than launched himself at my nose (and obviously biting it). I'm not sure how to deal with this. Any suggestions?

It makes me cry. My local humane society alone has 59 dogs right now! That is in a small town, and the dogs keep rolling in. Some of the reasons that they are there makes me want to scream. "He wouldn't stay chained up outside" Are you serious?

According to HSUS 6-8 million cats and dogs are cared for in animal shelters every year. About 3-4 MILLION are put down every year. Yet people want to breed their dog or don't want to get the cat fixed. Do people not care or are they just uneducated? Or are they just selfish and do it for money? A co-worker just got two German Shepherds and she is going to breed them. I'm not sure they are even full bred. They don't look like they are. It makes me sick. SO many wonderful dogs need homes and people just keep breeding their dogs and adding to the problem.

If you don't mind telling - How did you get into the hobby of showing dogs? I was thinking I might like to show dogs someday, but for now I'm just trying to get as much information as I can on the whole aspect. I like the idea of puppies and breeding dogs, but I wouldn't want to do it unless I was doing it the right way. What was it like when you first started out? What's the most enjoyable part of it?

Oh, and what breed(s) do you show?

Thanks.

I am moving out soon and was wondering if anyone had an experience like this. I have two cats that absolutely love each other. I can only bring one and plan to bring the indoor cat(Coco). Has anyone seperated cats who were fond of each other. If so what happened? I know every cat is different, but if I see a trend I can make an informed decision.

I have a yellowish orange guppy fish, she has a beautiful bright orange tail, today I noticed she is sooo fat, like she can barley swim because her belly is so big it just seems to pull her down, when I look at her belly it seems to have a bunch of black spots in it. I'm of course guessing she is pregnant, But how do I know when she is in labor? Like now she is just rocking.

I understand that when adopting a dog an applictaion, home inspection, interview with all members of the family & existing pets, and vet reference is needed. But, sometimes I think that rescue's go too far...like asking for your social security number for a credit check to make sure you have the funds for a dog. This recently happend to a friend of mine, who fortunatley, has great credit, and got the dog she wanted. Also, when adopting a dog don't you think it's unfair for the volunteers to deciede what dog is "right" for you? I know that their input is needed because they know the dogs better, but I think you should be able to see the dogs to choose from them. This also applies to foster homes.

I own a rescue Labrador/Bloodhound mix and the volunteers and staff were great. But, sometimes at some places they aren't so great.

Just my 2 cents...!

We just lost 2 more goldfish that were thriving in our 10 gallon tank. This is the 3rd batch we've lost after changing water. The others may have been due to temperature issues, but we were very careful this time. When we changed the water, we made sure the temperature was the same but within a few minutes they were floating. They were doing so good and growing until we changed the water. We have city water with a water softener. Do we dare try this again?

Hello all. Thanks for the previous answers to my question. Now I am wondering WHEN should I start to teach my puppy Sammy tricks? He is 3 months old and we got him this weekend. For the rest of this week I have to be gone 4 hours a day (while husband home). Should I wait until after this time to teach him tricks or can he start trying to learn right now? Any good links for HOW I teach him? Which trick is easier to learn for this 3 month puppy? Was wondering if anyone knew or had ideas. Thanks!

will do the time at a Federal Prison in Virginia, however when he gets out, probably in 18-20 months, he could face state charges from Virginia for dogfighting. Do you think the sentence is too light or too harsh? I say it's about right. Considering, he has lost his job, his home, pretty much all of his money and his life, this sounds to be about right. I'm also comparing this sentence to the very light sentences that many people get on the Houston Animal Cops show, where people routinely get 2 days and $1,000 fine for literally starving their pets to death through neglect, i.e. horses, dogs and cats. What do you think?

went on vacation to Florida for few weeks first vacation in 7 years.
the person taking care of the dog said here urine was dark we should bring her to a vet.
we brought her to are vet here in town they did a ex ray and showed me she had lot of stones and said she needed mediate bladder surgery.
OK told us the surgery would cost between 1500 & 1700 plus I already paid 350 for blood work and x rays
we decided to have it done the following Monday.
brought her in early Monday morning 8:00 AM we stopped feeding her 6:00 PM the nite before also stopped giving her water 10:00 PM the nite before.
the dog was ok before the surgery you would never know anything was wrong with her, running jumping barking etc.
we were told to pick her up 8:30 the next morning Tuesday after the surgery.
we called Tuesday to pick her up the vet said she did not wet yet to pick her up around 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM
we went to the vet around that time he said she still did not wet and she would be best at home cause she was not doing good there.
we brought her home she was in real bad shape she could hardly walk I had to carry her into the car.
then when we made it home I had to carry her out she could not get up.
we put her in the porch it is about 10 ft by 25 ft we were told to give her a 1/4 of a cup of water every few hrs we did every time she threw it up.
well she was just standing there in the room looking at the wall her legs shaking then she would lay there and look at the wall.
we never had a dog have surgery so we thought it was normal, we found out she had a hole in her bladder and it was leaking in her stomach that why when she threw up it was brown.
this went on all nite I stayed on the porch with her.
in the morning we called the vet he said to bring her to another vet hospital and have ultra sound done.
we did bring her this other hospital was 25 miles away.
they did the ultra sound and said her abdomen was filled with liquid and her bladder.
they said they would have to do a blood test to see if she had a hole in her bladder.
anyway they told me they would have to keep her there 3 to 5 days and due surgery to fix her up and put a catheter in her, and pump her up with iv before doing surgery.
I asked how much they told me 5000 but they would give me 30 percent discount for total of 3500.
I said for them to do it.
also before that I told them I wanted to bring her back to my vet they said he does not want her.
they spoke with him on the phone.
when I left there she could not stand her eyes were sunk in she looked like death I felt bad.
they gave her surgery the next day after they revived her with iv's.
the following day after the surgery we went to visit her about same time span as when we seen here from the first surgery, what a difference she was in pain but walking and real alert not standing looking at a wall.
plus she cried little well she was sore and had a cathiter in her
well they kept her two more days total five days at 2nd hospital now she is fine.
killed my bank account, she is a keshhound real good dog
she had 17 stones removed the largest are about 2 inches by 2 inches pee size to two that are egg size
Anyway was the first doctor wrong he kept saying when we first picked her up that Tuesday.
to take her to the hospital if you have a problem at nite when my office is closed he said that like 3x?
should I get my money back from the first doctor or what.
we were at the end of are wits all week here

I had to buy my puppy a larger crate. I moved the crate location from downstairs to upstairs because it is warmer up there and it gets very cold here. He seems like he is in distress.

He is pacing around the door where his crate used to be and he is afraid of his new/larger crate.

Is this normal? Was there a better way I could have done this?

I didnt think about it much and just moved it. Now I realize it is like I completely took down his home.

My puppy is now almost 3 months old... we got him when he was 7 weeks.

We've been very consistant when it comes to taking him outside to go potty.

Many times, he goes to the bathroom outside... but other times, he refuses to go outside and still goes in the house. Or he'll go pee outside and poop in the house. He still doesnt show anytype of warning like running to the door... he'll just stop where ever he is in the house and go right then

Should we be seeing more progress by now, or is this normal? How should we go about disciplining him when he goes inside? I dont want him to be afraid to go potty period, just indoors.

Any advice??? Thanks!

Oh, and BTW, we are crate training him and that's working great.
