Take him/her to the vet for shots and check up if you haven't already.

A stray dog may actually be an escaped pet. If it is a pure bred, look for a tattoo, which is usually on the inner thigh of the rear leg. If you see one, the American Kennel Club can provide the name of the owner. If there is no tattoo, have a vet check to see if there is a microchip. Most vets can read microchips and provide the name and address of the dog's owner.

If you are unable to find an owner, have a vet check the dog's health and give it shots. Having the dog spayed or neutered at the same time is a good idea. I also recommend a microchip so that, if the dog strays, you have a chance of getting it back.

Just an idea that may save some money. Take the dog to your local animal shelter or call them. Ask what their policy is for strays. You may be able to give them the puppy. They will have their staff Vet check the puppy out. They will put the puppy in quarantine to make sure it is not sick. If no one reports the dog missing you should be able to claim the puppy - pay the fees for license and vaccinations. In Phoenix Arizona most animal shelters offer free follow ups with a Vet as long as you do it within a required period of time. It depends on your local animal shelter's policies. Do the right thing, either go thru your local animal shelter / agency or take the dog to a Vet. If someone has lost their dog it may make you happy to return it - I would want someone to be honest if my dog got lost. Again if no one comes looking for the dog - you should be able to adopt it. If you do adopt it make sure you get the embedded chip. If you lose the dog all shelters and or Vets can read the chip and contact you.

FIRST BE SURE IT IS A STRAY. My love of my life, cocker spaniel used to run around the area where my business was and many times people tried to steal him because he "was a stray" I caught several people on my parking lot trying to get him in their car.

Have your vet to check and see if he has ever been chipped. and watch for signs in the neighborhood......etc and put up some "found" signs. Remember if he has a home someone loves him.

After that, Get him a physical and shots and give him discipline, shelter/food and love. If you don't know about dog training see: http://www.cesarmillaninc.com/ he's the best.

If you want to keep the stray dog you should go to the vet and make sure they are healthy. Maybe you should ask your vet on what would be good for you and your dog.

First, I would take it to a vet to see if it is embedded with a micro-chip. If it's not and you decide to keep it, have it vaccinated and de-fleaed. Good luck.
