It makes me cry. My local humane society alone has 59 dogs right now! That is in a small town, and the dogs keep rolling in. Some of the reasons that they are there makes me want to scream. "He wouldn't stay chained up outside" Are you serious?

According to HSUS 6-8 million cats and dogs are cared for in animal shelters every year. About 3-4 MILLION are put down every year. Yet people want to breed their dog or don't want to get the cat fixed. Do people not care or are they just uneducated? Or are they just selfish and do it for money? A co-worker just got two German Shepherds and she is going to breed them. I'm not sure they are even full bred. They don't look like they are. It makes me sick. SO many wonderful dogs need homes and people just keep breeding their dogs and adding to the problem.

its really horrible... the shelters I volunteer for have over 200 dogs and 150 cats..... and we get in so many more than we can get out... and you know what that means...

the only thing we can do is educate people about adopting and spay and neutering... thats why getting your pet fixed is not only helping him, but helping animals in shelters because they wont bring unwanted animals in this world, and take up a home for a shelter pet....

you should have your co worker watch this video :

the video was made at one of the shelters i volunteer for.... also educate her at how rewarding spaying and neutering her dogs are... please dont let her breed them!

People are ignorant and yes it's not an excuse for what they do. People should know better, especially people who claim to love animals. You should know that it's not the whole world that do these things to animals in Finland we have a very different situation from the U.S or UK. I looked for a dog shelter so I could adopt a dog before I bought my pup, there wasn't even a shelter and collie rescue here have a huge waiting list. Getting/keeping a dog here is expensive and as a result only people who really want dogs get them, that's not to say that there's no animal abuse here, there are always arseholes who abuse animals. I'm just glad that the authorities here take these things seriously.

Not all breeders are adding to the problem. People who breed without much forthought might be. But good, responsible breeders are not.
The PROBLEM is that people think animals are a luxury, that all they require is love, and that they are disposable.
If that way of thinking was changed, there would NOT be a problem.
And I think it is wrong to believe that EVERY person that wants a dog has to get it from a shelter. I am not going to be forced onto cleaning up the mess of others!! I have two rescue dogs and about 10 rescue cats. I do my part!!!!!! I breed (every two years or so) for a PURPOSE! And the purpose is NOT money or I would be breeding WAY more often!!!!!

I know! It's terrible. I purchased a dog from a breeder a few years ago, and I PROMISE: never again! My dane had years of health problems and it's terrible that he was bred for the sole purpose of making $$. I worked at with the local humane society for a year or so and it truly is awful how many dogs/cats/gerbils/guinea pigs/etc are given up. If you are going to take an animal into your home- it MUST be for their ENTIRE life.

My current little guy is from the humane society (an owner give-up bc they "traveled too much to care for him"- he's only 15lbs and makes a great traveling companion!).

Awareness is SO important!

Yes it does. The last time I went to a shelter, I walked out squalling. People dump unwanted pets on a country road near my house and it breaks my heart.

My dog, he was a stray hanging around my old house one day. The next, he was still there and I felt sorry for him, found some food and he's been with me for 2 years now. I'd forgotten just how quiet the house was before him. At first he got on my nerves, I was asking friends to take him.

Now I'm glad they didn't. He's the love of my life and no matter what he does (chews my slippers etc. etc.) I can't stay mad at him. Black lab, Harley Dean. He's my boy.

In the USA you dont see as many homeless dogs and cats as you see in south america... when i was in Venezuela, there were so many animals just walking around, without a home... at least here people actually bother to take care of them... people are stupid, they refuse to have their pets neutered or spayed... and then the pets have little offspring and then they dont know what to do with them... i know putting them to sleep is sad, but at times its the best thing that can be done.

People usually breed dogs in the way your colleague is doing because they're greedy - they see others raking in hundreds of pounds/dollars per puppy and want it for themselves. They know that whilst some people want to rehome rescue dogs, there's a steady flow of people, both good and bad, who want purebreds.

I'm in the UK; the RSPCA policy is that no healthy animal in a shelter will ever be put down, unless it proves impossible to rehome because it is dangerous or vicious. That's a blessing for all the British unwanted animals out there.

I agree!!! It makes me sick too...I live on a corner in the country and people dump dogs there all the time...I see them all the time walking around with nothing but skin and bones :( I always say that if I hit the jackpot or somehow get rich one day...I will spend it all on the animals...getting them all fixed up and into homes...not just caged up waiting to die....I'm glad you posted this...maybe next time someone goes to spend 1,000 on a "special" breed of dog...they might consider going to the shelter and getting a "mutt"

i don't think it's wrong for people to breed their dogs. i think it's wrong if people breed their dogs just to make some cash. i have bred my dog and kept all of her pups. the person who owns the father to the pups kept two and i kept the other three. they all live happily with me. having 4 dogs in my house is not easy, but it's better than throwing them on the street. if people could keep their pups until they were sold would really help, instead of leaving their dogs out on the streets.

Yes, it makes me very very sad. That's why whenever someone is on here talking about buying a "Maltipoo, PugZhu, LabTerrier...." I always suggest getting a shelter dog instead.

Shame on these BYB's for being so Greedy!

All of my dogs have been rescues and I will keep on doing that.
