My puppy is now almost 3 months old... we got him when he was 7 weeks.

We've been very consistant when it comes to taking him outside to go potty.

Many times, he goes to the bathroom outside... but other times, he refuses to go outside and still goes in the house. Or he'll go pee outside and poop in the house. He still doesnt show anytype of warning like running to the door... he'll just stop where ever he is in the house and go right then

Should we be seeing more progress by now, or is this normal? How should we go about disciplining him when he goes inside? I dont want him to be afraid to go potty period, just indoors.

Any advice??? Thanks!

Oh, and BTW, we are crate training him and that's working great.

Yes, after that long he should be housebroken (except maybe an occasional accident). Dogs will get on a schedule, walk him in the morning until he poops then give him a treat and tell him good boy. Do the same thing in the evening. Just use a lot of praise when they potty outside. If he goes inside, just use a stern voice and say "potty outside" or something to that effect. Then take him outside right away. Don't let him see you clean up the mess, it just gives them gratification that they got your attention.

First, let me say, I have had many house trained dogs and I have never used a crate. Most people will suggest the crate, which is just a fancy word for cage, but it can be done without one. They are great for people who work, and most people do. Your choice. Anyway, I suggest taking him outside after each accident in the home. He'll eventually associate relieving himself with going outside. I also suggest, if you have the time, taking him out each time he wakes from a nap and about every 15 minutes of play time. My last puppy never used a crate, but was house trained at 8 weeks. You really shouldn't discipline him for going inside until he is about 6 months old, because he is just too young right now to understand. However, do praise him when he goes outside and say something like "good boy go pee pee". I hate when people answer my questions in a condescending way, so I hope I don't seem that way. Good luck with the pup.

I was in a very similar situation with my pup. We got her at 8 weeks and did the house training and crate thing. She quite often potty in the house but if we caught her we would yell NO and then take her right away outside so she knows that's where you go. We also would take her out and say potty for her to associate the word with going to the restroom...we would then praise her after she would go outside. I would not discipline her cause she is still young and she may fear you if you start to use spanking. Our pup is about 4 months now and she has learned to go to the door and scratch on it when she needs to potty. You should be seeing results soon if you have been practicing with her a routine. Good luck!

Don't punish him. He simply doesn't know why you are doing that.
Reinforcement is always best. But it does mean you have to put in some time. BE sure he goes out often and especially 20 to 30 minutes after he eats. The last thing you do at night and the first thing in the morning.

Hang a bell on the door near the floor and every time you take him out be sure he sees you ring the bell. Eventually use his foot and ring the bell when you take him out. Hopefully, he will get the picture.

Clean any spots really well, or he will reuse the same spot. And at his age his bladder is still small and doesn't hold much. And keep in mind he is an infant and needs infant care and patience

luck

Don't discipline them when they go in the house, it teaches them that they just can't go where you can see. It works much better if you takes lots of treats outside with you when you take him out and PRAISE HIM like he's doing the best thing ever. Positive reinforcement is the best way to potty train a pup.
