OK...there are so many people that feel that EVERY puppy/kitten takes the home away from animals already in shelters and forces the death of those animals.

SOOOO...what are we to do when presented with pregnant dogs and cats that are going to give birth to unwanted litters??? Many of us shout SPAY THEM ASAP!!!! BUT...many of you people so against breeding and you want people to think of the shelter animals say DON'T SPAY THEM!!

So why the conflict? Animals have no thoughts on "aborting" a pregnancy. Why would it be wrong to abort a pregnancy that WILL IN FACT impact a shelter????

There have been MANY people that were "disgusted" at the thought of aborting litters. MANY. I work in a spay/neuter clinic and we spay probably 60 cats weekly. About HALF of them are pregnant. Think of how many kittens that would be!!!!!!

We do it up to the last second. If they are NOT having contractions, they are SPAYED. I do not like seeing kittens in the garbage can that would have been born the next day....but if we ARE so concerned about all the animals lingering in shelters.....don't we HAVE to do it???

Remember....every kitten you DO place takes a home from one already here in a shelter!!!!!!

You and I know what its like to toss kittens and pups in a barrel. These people couldn't do it. In fact I goes as far as to say the WOULDN'T do it. I'm all for spaying a pregnant ***** or Cat. I've cleaned my share of over populated cages and kennels. I remember one day we had the last kitten adopted out and we all cheered. Within an hour we had three litters and a pregnant cat delivering in the back. It never ends. Earlier I saw someone post how she had a pregnant dog because her husband wouldn't get his male dog neutered. Get this load of crap " He doesn't want him to lose his manhood" No excuses why she wouldn't get her ***** spayed. So two unaltered dogs living in the same house and they wonder why they are having pups? IDIOTS!!! More unwanted pups.

For me, it depends on how far along they are... MOST of the time I agree with spay/aborting.. But, if it's really late in the pregnancy, I can't do it myself..
I was helping a vet with a spay/abort at our shelter that the owner was having done cause she thought she wasn't that far along.. Opened her up to find 2 full term puppies, which we then tried to save like the hopeless saps we are.. It was bad genetics anyhow, one cleft palate and another one with problems.. 99% of the time though, I say spay/abort early..
While you are correct, they do take the place of an animal in a shelter, if they are already full term aren't they technically alive too? For me, a life is a life.. Granted, I wouldn't foster a dog from day one of her pregnancy- I would spay her.. But, once they are ready to be born what difference does it make between killing them and killing the ones already there? Chances are, they can be a bit more adoptable then some of the ones already there.. That's for each shelter to decide on a case by case basis.. Granted, if it's a black lab that we already have tons of in the shelter, the obvious choice would be to spay no matter how late it is. If it's a smaller breed of dog that has more potential available homes, I would say to save those and euthanise ones that can't be found homes for..
I have hauled many a wheelbarrow of dead puppies and kittens to the cremator.. It's disturbing that people still don't understand that perfectly adoptable animals die in shelters everyday and that not neutering THEIR pet causes it..

I operate a cat rescue and can tell you that I do think about this issue all the time. I have had cats that were pregnant aborted. If the cat is in very late term (I could feel the kittens moving) then I do allow them to be born. I can easily place them once they are weaned.

NO cat leaves my rescue unless it has been neutered or spayed. NO EXCEPTIONS are made. Male kittens can be neutered at 3 months, females 4 months. There are vets that specialize in even younger spay/neuter of kittens but I feel they are still too small and don't fair as well if it is done that early.

I think if the dog wasn't intended to breed and got pregnant due to owners irresponsibility, then spay the dog as soon as she's found to be pregnant.

It's painless to the unborn pups (kittens, etc), they are administered a overdose of barbiturates just as are most pets who are humanely euthanized.

I think you should abort if you want to. Too many people are sooooo opinionated. I think that if you don't want the puppies and it was an accident then do what is best for you and your family. I get so sick of asking a question and people not answering it but tell the pc answer

For the record, I have never seen anyone on here type the words "Don't spay them", pregnant or not...!

I'm all for it.
