It takes a solid table to set a 55 gal tank on. Metal stands are a good choice but any table that is large enough with say 2"x2" legs that have bracing or a shelf towards the bottom should work fine. Basically you can build a stand using 4 three foot 2"x2"s a half a sheet of 3/4" plywood and three eight foot 1"x 2"s to dress up the edge of the plywood.

Good luck

A filled 55 gallon aquarium weighs 625 pounds! Then add 55 pounds of gravel and decorations. That is one heavy tank! I have a 55 gallon that I've had to move a couple of times. I wouldn't trust a tank that size on anything except for an aquarium stand that was made just for a 55 gallon aquarium. They can be expensive I know. You can see if any of your local fish stores has any used ones or look for some good sales! Or you can try craig's list online.

Water weighs about 8 lbs per gallon so 55 gallons is about 440 lbs. That requires a substantial stand! My 55 gallon is on a metal stand that came with it. I have 20 gallons on a sturdy square wooden table.

I don't think I'd trust anything made at Ikea to support that kind of weight especially not anything made out of that pressboard wood.

I know it sounds tempting to buy those tables from ikea for 20 dollars, but it's not worth it. They are not made out of wood, and will collapse! You can buy a 55 gallon tank at petsmart for 70 dollars I believe. You don't want to risk the tank collapsing because that's insane water damage to your house, plus all the other damages. 55 gallon spilling into the floor is not a joke.

I built a sturdy stand for my 75 gallon aquarium out of 2x4's. If you are a handy man I would go that route. I spent only $15 on the supplies to build it. My wife made a cover for it and it looks great.
