I had to buy my puppy a larger crate. I moved the crate location from downstairs to upstairs because it is warmer up there and it gets very cold here. He seems like he is in distress.

He is pacing around the door where his crate used to be and he is afraid of his new/larger crate.

Is this normal? Was there a better way I could have done this?

I didnt think about it much and just moved it. Now I realize it is like I completely took down his home.

great posts, I think taking it one step at a time helps change the crate then change the location.
In any event now that its done here are couple of tips
when the puppy is out of the crate, sneak some treat in the crate so if he goes in just to sniff around he is rewarded.
when you put the puppy in the create give a safe chew toy or something to eat, chewing can help alleviate the anxiety.
don't let you pup out if it is crying or yelping. only calm dogs get to come out.!!
good luck

How old is the dog? If he was so used to being in the other crate it probably is a big change, and since you changed the location of his crate it's probably an even harder change. Maybe you could move the new crate back downstairs where his old one used to be for a couple days, and keep the same things in his crate (blanket / toys) until he gets used to it, and then move it back upstairs.

move the new crate to the old spot, also if you have a blanket or pad that he sleeps on, put it in the crate or some of his toys so he can see that it is his crate.

If you ultimately want to move the crate to a new location, once he's used to the crate, then make a big deal of showing him that you are moving his crate to a new location.

I think you just made too many changes at one time for him and he's a bit stressed.

If you had any blankets or bedding in the old crate it will help a lot to put them in the new one without washing them first. If he smells his own scent on his things inside the new crate he won't freak out as much. He'll be okay, but it might help to put the larger crate where his smaller one used to be for a few days and let him get used to the new crate, then let him get used to the new location.

I would put the new crate in the old location until your dog is used to it. You should also put any old blankets or rugs from the old crate into the new one. You moved his special place..of course he is distressed! Try switching things back around for a couple of months...he should settle down.

This is completely normal. The sam thing happend to my dog when I moved his crate. Your dog will soon get used to his crate being moved to a new location. It will just take time.

Well, you've pretty much turned his whole world upsidown. You completley changed his bedroom (which smells like him), and then you moved it upstairs, where he isnt used to being when in his room. I would suggest getting him used to the bigger crate first by putting that downstairs. Once he's comfy with that, then you can bring it upstairs.

I understood to switch foods slowly, I just assumed that that meant wet or dry foods. I wonder if there is a canine nutritionist in your corner of the world that can come up with a diet for Zoe's needs. Still praying for you all and Zoe.

If you give it time he will adjust to the new home.
