We found out our puppy has a liver shunt - he is 5 months old and we have had him 3 months - he drinks alot and pees alot - the vet told us he would need surgery (which costs between 2500 - 3500 dollars and we have to take him out of state to get the surgery because our state dont have a vet that does it) we cant afford the surgery (we have 6 children) so the vet said we could have him put to sleep. I asked him how long he would live if we didnt have the surgery and he said he could live 6mo or 7yrs he couldnt be sure. I dont want my pup to suffer but I dont have the heart to put him to sleep. has anyone ever had a pup survive with a liver shunt? I dont know what to do. Can anyone give me some serious advice? Thank You.

Okay - I don't have my water parameters, because I'm at work (so you don't have to ask for them) - but they are *fine*. I test them weekly and ammonia, pH, nitrates, nitrites, etc. are all on par. I do 20-25% weekly water changes, keep my Mollies in brackish water and am basically someone who truly tries to be the best fish keeper possible (even though I definitely have made my mistakes in the past).

History:

I lost my entire tank of adult Mollies when I converted my 2 10G tanks into 1 29G tank. Apparently the way I converted the tanks freaked/stressed my fish out and then came down with a reverse or deflated swim bladder problem (all of them, surprisingly enough) and within a month, they began to be unable to swim (one soon after another).

They would keep to the bottom, just flapping their side fins and their entire underbody would be almost "paralyzed". They would stop feeding (not able to swim to the surface and not even able to dig for falling food, until they ended up passing away. The diagnosis: Deflated/Reverse Swim Bladder Disease. (This is a "probable" diagnosis I got from a woman who is a zookeeper specializing in aquatics that happened to be at the LFS when I was there trying to explain the situation to get a diagnosis to the manager of the fish department. She works for the LFS company, so she became interested in my story and after talking to me for quite some time, determined that is what she thought the problem was.)

Current Tank:

Anyways --- I began to restock my tank with 2M Mollies - I thought 1 was F, sheesh - you'd think I could genderize them by now, but it is a very "fancy tail" Molly and I didn't look carefully enough to see it had a gonopodium "hidden" in its other "fancy fins". I bought them last Monday. I thought the two of them were doing fine, so yesterday I added in 2F Dalmatian Mollies. Water tests are still coming back perfectly fine as of this morning.

Besides the 2 Cream Mollies I added last Monday, I already had 4 juveniles in the 29G from previous Molly pregnancies (their mothers having passed away in the death tank episode mentioned above). I also had 7 "baby" Mollies (< 3 months old). All of these babies/juveniles and the 1 "fancy fin" M Molly are doing great. The Dalmatians are also "adjusting". They were sort of hiding earlier and the "fancy fin" Molly decided to "get to know them" (If you know what I mean, that's how I realized - duh, he's a he and not a she.)

The Sick Molly:

The 1M Creamsicle Molly that I bought last Monday is now showing symptoms of the "deflated swim bladder" problem that my other Mollies died of. He is staying at the bottom of the tank (hiding under the bubbler wand). This morning when I fed everyone, they were busy eating and he didn't move. When I came back 15 minutes later, he was trying to surface and he was severely struggling. His two side fins were working, but his tail fin and underbody were not appearing to be functioning. He fell back down and sort of bopped on the rocks. When I came back another 5-10 minutes later, he was back laying on the rocks under the bubbler.

What on earth can be done??? Has *anyone* had this problem? He has NO physical signs of parasites, Ich/Velvet, Dropsy/bloat or any other fish diseases. If I don't do something today, I feel he is going to die for sure. I will probably end up taking him back to the LFS to see if they can "save him" because I don't think this deflated/reverse swim bladder can be "fixed", where the other swim bladder disease can be fixed sometimes.

I am going to be posting this on as many fish forums as I can find, so please don't think I am "spamming". I just really would like to find someone else who has had this "deflated swim bladder problem" in their Mollies or other fish.

Please post here or even email me at ldorrington@earthlink.net -- I will be checking periodically from work all day to see if I can get some suggestions/advice.

My coworker has a cat who seems to have a real mental problem. He's always been well treated, and he's about 2 years old now, but he's got a split personnality thing going on. One minute, he'll be affectionate and sweet, and moments later his ears are back, his tail is twitching and he'll take off and run over the furniture, knocking stuff down and if you get too close, he'll hiss at you, swat at you, etc.
We've made an appointment with vet at the end of this week.
Any ideas?

i feed mine eagle pack, its a organic, holistic, human grade food that works wonders on dogs.
old roy, dads, 9 lives, iams, eukanuba, science diet, anything from purina, fancy feast, friskies, whisker lickens, pedigree, merrick, along with a ton of other food are crap. some being worse than others. i cringe when i see people buying these products. its horrible for pets in the long run and cant take years off a pets life. everyone knows iams and pedigree cause they advertise, but they dont have a good product. science diet will pay for vets college bills, and vets feel they owe something to the company, thats why they sell it. science diet is pretty much all chemicals. id recommend eagle pack, natural choice, wellness, or if you desperatly want something good innova. after i get my vet tech degree im moving on to a animal nutritionist....

I'm asking this since my aunt has a female cat who she think is in heat. So, she is keeping her INSIDE. this cat also has a 4 month old kitten that is a male so my aunt was worried that the kitten could get the mother pregnant.

To the best of our knowledge they weren't particularly old. Only clue we have is that their water turned very murky the day before and was like that when their bodies were found, despite being changed. There didn't appear to be any damage to the scales or anything. Thanks.

Sometimes, tehre is just a little pink showing and it is cute. Others, his tongue just hangs out about an inch or so, at its quite disturbing. I usually just touch it and it will go back in.

For the first time ever I have terrible skin, this started about 2 weeks ago and I have only had my kitten for about 3 1/2 weeks. I do not want to get rid of the kitten (my daughter wont hear of it) but I dont know what to do about my skin, it is really bad. I am trying to keep the kitten out of my room but this is difficult as it means my door must constantly be shut - the kitten will also start scratching and banging the door to be let it.

About a month ago my Pekingese starting having seizures. First they happened about once a week and within the past 2 weeks and especially this past week she has been having at least 3-5 a day. I think she is having them at night as well because when I lifted her bed I noticed a big pee stain and I just washed her bed the week before. Right before her seizure she gets disorientated her breathing becomes very slow and shallow then she falls onto her her side. She tightens up, once in a while she she will lightly kick her backs legs then her head reaches as far back where it almost touches her back. Once is a while she moans out. This will last about 30 seconds then it passes she is shacking pretty badly then she is fine.

So my question is what should I do? Put her Phenobarbitol at her age or just try to make her comfortable as possible?

I play this game with my dog in the house. What we do is I throw a toy for him to go fetch and then I take off in the other direction. He comes chasing after me around the house. Anyway, when he chases me it's almost like he makes a crying, whining whimper. Any idea why this is?

I saw a tiny baby guppy in my tank yesterday. She disappeared under a rock, but I'm worried that she'll get eaten by the other fish. We have a good amount of plants and a large sunken ship, so there are probably some good places to hide. Should I try to find the baby guppy and move her to another tank or a breeding tank for safety? Or just leave her be? (I don't even know if she's alive still--I haven't seen her since yesterday).

i know many people have mixed opinions on this so was just after some opinions. personally, i do not agree with backyard breeding. i do however believe in reputable breeders who do this to better the breed (for purebreds) and for the absolute love of the breed. i know many people consider these "hybrid" dogs mutts, and truthfully, thats what thry r... but mutt is just a nasty word. i have a maltese x poodle who i rescued from a life of terrible abuse. though i never call her a maltipoo or moodle, i always refer to her as a crossbreed. i work in a shelter and deal with crossbreed dogs every day. i think that sometimes people are a little hard on these "mutts" because, while their genetic bloodline is not perfect, they r still wonderful companion dogs who have alot of respect and love to give to their owners.... i am really interested to hear other peoples opinions on these mixed breeds as it seems to be a growing trend. pls no abuse-im only after genuine answers and opinions! =)
