Does the term "Bird brained" ring a bell. Although I am devoted to animals I own 15 chickens and they are not the brightest of animals. Unless a chicken is clucky and wanting to sit and hatch the eggs it is sitting on, she will lay them and then wander off without a second thought to the egg she has just layed.
Chickens will sit on duck eggs, geese eggs, fake eggs or any other sort of egg which shows that they really don't have a clue.
Domestic chickens in this day and age have been bred to lay and lay, so that is what they do.
Where they aware of what you where doing they might get sad but as they are not then no I don't think they are.

No, I'd be a chicken and I'd do what chickens always do, lay another one to replace it. They don't get attatched to their eggs. They turn broody later on when they have a clutch, and they care for their chicks. But apart from trying to conceal the nest they're not bothered about eggs because they can lay one a day until they have a clutch.

Its' a chicken!!! They eat bugs and things out of cow and horse droppings. Do you really think they can comprehend anything????? God gave them the natural instinct to be protective - they are still just a chicken! God also intended that to be an additional food source. I trust him!
