My coworker has a cat who seems to have a real mental problem. He's always been well treated, and he's about 2 years old now, but he's got a split personnality thing going on. One minute, he'll be affectionate and sweet, and moments later his ears are back, his tail is twitching and he'll take off and run over the furniture, knocking stuff down and if you get too close, he'll hiss at you, swat at you, etc.
We've made an appointment with vet at the end of this week.
Any ideas?

Thanks for the answers, but this is not normal behaviour. He isn't doing it because he's hyper (I have 3 of my own cats at home, and I know what a hyper cat is like ;}), he's really acting frustrated and angry and a little psychotic (if one can use human feelings to describe a cat). I mean I do hope it's normal, but it doesn't seem like any normal kitty behaviour I've ever seen.

I've had cats all my life and at one time or another they all had the "cat crazies"...in fact I had a cat that was almost 19 years old and at that age they really don't do a whole lot..but from time to time she'd run around like a wild thing.

I do however think a Vet visit is a good idea.
Chances are it's nothing, but if it is a problem is more likely physical rather than mental.

Good luck, I hope kitty gets a clean bill of health from the Vet.

hmm.. a lot of cats do this. it's not like a mental problem, you just have to keep in mind that they are cats and cats used to be wild. They still have their hunter instincts, and that's all it is.. it's in hunter mode. Just let him/her be. Give it more space to run around and more things to play with.. you can even join in and throw a few mice and/or balls around for it to attack.

It's kind of annoying, especially when you're trying to get things done and it keeps swatting at you, but that's just one of the things you'll have to accept if you want a cat. It's really not that bad, and pretty adorable even when you think back on it.

Well I hope I've been of some help!

A lot of cats act like this sometimes it's for attention. I don't think the vet would do anything about it becuase it's behavioral nothing medically worng with the cat.

He's just a cat. He doesn't have ADD because of that. Cat's do things like that sometimes. Just let them alone for a bit and they will calm down.

Could be that one of his parents was feral. I had a kitten whose mother had gotten out and got pregnant by a feral cat and he was completely insane like that too.
