We're in the process of buying a townhome that is being built. we need to decide between a 80% and a 90% energy efficent furnace. Is it worth $1500 to upgrade to the 90% for a 1600 square foot townhome, a middle unit.

The heat went out in my 4 season porch without me realizing it and my plants have been subjected to harsh temperatures(between 30 and 6 degrees, darn cold snap) for at least a whole day. They are now extremely droopy and some are squishy, some have turned brown depending on the plant. I have Boston ferns, kalanchoe, spider plants, prayer plants, christmas cactus, african violets, dwarf palms and others that i can't remember the name of right now. I want to know if I can possibly save any of them (the spider plants look the best) and what I can do to do so. Also, how do I know if the soil is frozen? It feels cold, but it is not like blocks of ice or anything like that.

When you purchase a home and are looking at the kitchen, how do you judge the quality of a kitchen's granite countertop in terms of quality and craftsmanship?

Someone in our condo complex is feeding squirrels peanuts. I know this because peanuts don't grow around here! The dang squirrels are upending my potted plants to either hide their stash, or reclaim it. I find peanut shells all over my patio. It's like every other day I see another potted plant destroyed! There's no way to enclose the patio, so any ideas on how to make my space squirrel-proof?

And why do people feel the need to feed vermin? They're dirty, destructive and have plenty to eat without gorging on peanut.

I'm looking to buy my first home. I live in south-west Brisbane. A house I am inspecting today faces East. I've previously been told by someone that a North or South facing house is best. Any explanation?

i am fond of heating just any room that i am using than heating the whole house. i do this to save on my gas bill, not because of saving the planet anyway. but i recently discovered that each time i turn a radiator on, the boiler burns in the same capacity as when the whole house is heated. am i cutting any cost by heaating just a room instead of the whole house

It has been broken for weeks along with many other things. He picked up his rent $ yesterday and fixed everything but the furnace. I have told him for weeks about this, and not it's bitter cold and I can't live with it. Yesterday he said someone was coming to fix it, then 5-6 hours ago he said that he was getting ready to call the repair guy.

If the repairman doens't show up today, what should I do?

I'm working on a valentines present for my girlfriend and have (almost) gotten to the assembly phase. I'm attempting to build a picture frame and have thus far sawed down the stump from our douglas fir christmas tree into 4 appox 1"x1" slats. Being that I've done this all by hand and it has taken approximately forever, I really don't want to risk the wood splitting. I don't currently own a drill so if I can find a way to safely pull this one off without pilot holes, it would help to save the expenditure of heading to Lowes and buying one. Any suggestions or ideas?

I work for a custom home builder and am currently working on new floor plan ideas. When purchasing a new home what are some features that make / break a home for you? Is there anything specific you look for when you tour potential homes? Please keep in mind that these homes are priced mid-higher end for our region. What are the average number of bedrooms and baths you look for? Is there a specific kitchen cabinet finish or granite finish you look for? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated as we build mainly spec homes that go on the market and then need to appeal to the mass of home buyers.

Please help. We bought a new memory foam mattress at the weekend, one which is 100% memory foam and no springs. My problem is that I have hardly slept at all since we have had it. I expected it to mould to me but actually find it quite hard. Has anyone else had this problem and will it get better? I thought that it would "give" a bit but seeing as the selling point of memory foam is that it retains it's shape etc. am now a bit doubtful. Please help, it has cost us a fortune and we really can't/don't want to go back and buy another type.
