i am fond of heating just any room that i am using than heating the whole house. i do this to save on my gas bill, not because of saving the planet anyway. but i recently discovered that each time i turn a radiator on, the boiler burns in the same capacity as when the whole house is heated. am i cutting any cost by heaating just a room instead of the whole house

I only heat the rooms which I use, but ALWAYS leave the other radiators turned on to the 'frost' setting to prevent them freezing up. I always have reasonable gas bills.

This is false economy. The reason the boiler keeps firing is because you are trying to heat the whole house with one radiator, and its never going to work. All the heat is being soaked away into the colder rooms next door. Far better to keep the whole house warm, it will get to temperature quicker, then cut off till it cools a bit.
