Now the most important part if I were to buy the materials would it be way out to think maybe my mom, my sister and I could do a good job installing them even on stairs or will it be a really bad idea to try and do it ourselves?

my father, brother, and i installed the click laminant (wood) flooring last year. It cost us about 97 cents a square foot, and that was cheap for the time, cuz it was a new thing on the market. We installed it ourselves and saved a bundle on labour. The only thing you may have problems with are the corner peices as they can be tricky, since the boards have to (click /snap) together. Also you will need to have some sort of cutting experience with a saw, and cut the boards from the back side so you dont ruin the walking surface. If you have the money hire a contractor so that the work is warrentied. If your strapped for cash, its not all that hard, just follow instructions. One thing i didnt do was use a separater/ transition piece to separate the rooms.(hitting myself now) And by not doing this the boards tend to sorta split apart, i just simply knock them back with my shoes.

The entire house? I would not put hardwood in the bathrooms if I were you. Anyways, if you install it yourself, maybe $2 a square foot for an inexpensive floor. If you pay an installer you can probably tack on another $2-3 per square foot for installation.

Not sure, but another suggestion to look into is bamboo floors. Absolutely beautiful, comes in many shades, and is about 1/3 the cost of wood flooring. Environmentally responsible too.

You can purchase hardwood laminates like "Pergo" for $1 to $2 per square foot, and tongue and groove solid hardwood for $4.00 to $5.00 per square foot at Home Depot. Last I saw Home Depot also charged $4.50 per square foot to install tongue and groove hardwood.
