I'm looking to buy my first home. I live in south-west Brisbane. A house I am inspecting today faces East. I've previously been told by someone that a North or South facing house is best. Any explanation?

Pro's: beautiful sunrises, lots of morning and early afternoon sunshine, warmer facing East rooms in the winter mornings. windows facing west in the evening will have beautiful sunsets.

Con's: waking up early to sunlight if your bedroom faces that way, alot of heat in summertime, rooms facing east will be darker late afternoon and evening so have to use more electricity.

In all honesty, our old house faced west and we had gorgeous sunsets in evening and mornings our kitchen which was facing east had beautiful sunrises and sunlight. Houses that face north and south seem to me to be darker, drab.

If I was house shopping I would look for one with alot of windows in all directions, so you have excellent cross circulation when they are open and I do like the east/west homes the best.

Oh cool since u live in brisbane the climate there is hot now but in the evenings it sure must be cooler.

Since the sun rises in the East it's a natural thing that one has to be a early riser unless u have tainted windows with air condition in ur rooms. So frankly speaking East is meant for those who are early risers or who want more prosperity...One who wants to flourish in business rises up early and starts his/ her day bright and fresh just as the warm sun makes u feel when u see it in the wee hours.

I say North east faced house is most auspicious and gives u more energy and vitality along with much wanted prosperity. A house door opening to the south is never good it is destroyer of wealth and things don't happen on time, it's the direction of the doomed or rather of loss west side house is good and if u get a house northwest it's cool too don't go for house facing the South ,Southwest or Southeast it's no good I am telling u from my own experience as we are residing in our home which has a south facing and it's truly no good nothing happens on time and even if we do venture things to be done it takes like forever even for 2 minutes work.

I'd never have believed it but since the past 16 yrs I am experiencing it thats quite some experience. In my earlier home all was super cool and great it was in the North east direction it truly spruced up all the work and things were very nice.

South West Facing House

Every one is talking about how nice it is to get the morning sun.

Most homes have the largest surface area on the front. During the day, a house facing south absorbs more heat than one facing any other direction. You might say a house facing north would get the same amount of sun on the southern side. True,
but then the living room would always be dark.

If the house faces east, the living room which is normally in the front, would only get morning sun. It would require the lights be on from noon until sunrise. Another reason to have a home facing south.

Dude. Don't worry about all that. THE major influence on purchasing a home is where the home is located. Is it a corner lot? If so make sure there is no easy access to major thoroughfares. Reason being is that those homes are hit more often by burglaries, easy in, easy out.

Check with crime watch or police in the areas you are looking at buying. Check with neighbors all around to see how the neighborhood is. What are the electric rates? Water Rates?
Believe it or not, you can go across the street from my house and pay 20% more for water and electricity.

Schools make a difference, if one is across the street you may have problems with kids trampling your yard. Destroying your property. Even some of the better than good neighborhoods have this problem.
Is your house on a major walkway for kids to get home? Ever try and get through a school zone when hundreds of parents want to pick up their kids? Check the neighbors… REALLY
Go to the house at night; also check the local supermarkets. Do they look safe?

Look for problems that may arise from neighboring homes. Do you really want to move in where the people next door look like they have a garage sale every week?

Feng Shui- Dung shui… This also includes, “If you can see the back door from the front door” it’s suppose to mean money easy in, easy out. I guess I have to tell my client that his 9 million dollar house on a golf course he’s owned for 20 years is not a good money risk.

A tree or two can block the sun if you can wait a few years for it to get to a healthy size.

Me, I didn't care about the sun.. The wind is what whips through here. I planted 4 Christmas trees for under $100.00 and transplanted a couple of maples. Few years later, not so much wind.

And I live in Texas!!! LMAO

I think a house facing north would be colder in winter. A house facing east would get the morning sun to wake up with, which is cool to me. A house facing south would be alright but, the north side of the house would still be getting the winter blast. West would be the afternoon and evening sun which would be mighty warm in the summer. I would go with facing the east myself.

Pros:We like a house facing East or West. You can see the sun coming up every day and more like you have a window in the back that allows you to see also the sun set. Beautiful. We have a 2 story house (facing West) in Salem, Oregon and we love it.
Cons: If it is a hot place, the front of the house may be too hot.

The big thing you want to consider with a house which faces East is that the summer sun will fall on the back in the late afternoon and evening. If you don't have a back deck, that's no problem. But if you like to sit on the deck in the early evening, or have dinner there, that can be a problem.

The pro is that you get nice morning sun on the front. That's good for plant growth and creates a pleasant atmosphere.

A house facing East would receive the AM sun in the front rooms and afternoon sun in the rear rooms of the house during the PM hours.
I lived in a house facing South once and I did like it because we would get the sun all during the day in the living room, dining room and kitchen which helped with heating it naturally.
I suppose it depends on what you like personally.
I've noticed too that houses that do face N or S, the opposite side stays dirty with mildew a lot more.
