Obviously we must have a neighbour with a wireless doorbell as well which makes our bell ring when someone is at their door.

I tried changing the code, but no matter what combination I tried besides the default, one doorbell would work, but the other wouldn't. I got 2 door bell buttons and two doorbells with my crappy kit.

YES HAD SAME PROBLEM AND YOU GOT IT RIGHT ONE OF YOUR NEIGHBORS MUST HAVE ONE THAT IS SET TO THE SAME 'CODE' AS YOURS. TRY AND CHANGE YOUR CODE. IF THAT DOESN'T WORK TAKE IT BACK AND GET A DIFFERENT BRAND.

I own a wireless doorbell and it has little switches inside the push and on the back of thesounder which you can set to change the channel. Providing the switches are set the same on both the system will work.

Most people don't change them from the out of box default , hence when somebody rings next doors, it transmits on the same channel and yours rings as well . Try looking for the little switches and changing them to select a different channel. The instructions that came with it should help.

Guy across from my son's house opens his garage door and his ( my sons) door bell rings. Some of these devices can be programed to alternate frequencies.
