Someone in our condo complex is feeding squirrels peanuts. I know this because peanuts don't grow around here! The dang squirrels are upending my potted plants to either hide their stash, or reclaim it. I find peanut shells all over my patio. It's like every other day I see another potted plant destroyed! There's no way to enclose the patio, so any ideas on how to make my space squirrel-proof?

And why do people feel the need to feed vermin? They're dirty, destructive and have plenty to eat without gorging on peanut.

I don't think the issue was about the squirrels as animals, the issue was about the fact that these creatures are destroying private property on a regular basis due to someone's choice to feed them something that is not available in their natural habitat

I don't think the point was to voice a complaint on a national level, the question was how to keep vermin off private property when some bozo decides to feed them something they wouldn't be able to find in the wild. Though given the damage these vermin cause, a national complain isn't outrageous.

1. Homeowners in areas with a heavy squirrel population must keep attics and basements carefully sealed to prevent property damage caused by nesting squirrels. That someone feeds them exacerbates the problem for everyone in the complex.

2. Squirrels may carry plague or other animal-borne diseases. That's not cute.

3. Raw peanuts contain a trypsin inhibitor that prevents the absorption of protein in the intestine. This type of deficiency has been found to cause Metabolic Bone Disease, a somewhat common ailment found in malnourished squirrels. Feeding squirrels peanuts is HARMFUL TO THE SQUIRREL

4. Squirrels are often the cause of electricity outages. The animals will enter transformers or capacitors looking for food. The squirrels are then electrocuted and cause a power surge that shorts equipment. Squirrels have brought down the high-tech NASDAQ stock market twice and were responsible for a spate of power outages at the University of Alabama.

Squirrels are probably the worst vermin to get rid of (without hurting them) besides raccoons.

I think there may be some chemicals you can use...or you can always go to your Super and have them make the peanut culprit stop!

You can also spray 'em with water.

why don't you address your neighbors instead of complaining NATIONWIDE? This isn't a complaint department since the last time I checked.
