I've just bought my first house, and I'm trying to get lounge redecorated.

The ceilings have an old artex 'stipple' effect and have been scraped back in places.

Is it advisable to attempt to 'skim' the ceilings as an amateur, or is this a job for the pros only?

I've tried to read up on it, and from what I can gather I need to roughly do the following:

Remove any large peaks from the 'stippled' effect, scraper or similar?

Paint the ceiling with two coats of watered down PVA (unibond?)

Mix up multi finish plaster (pinky colour) and cover the ceiling as evenly as possible. After 1/2 hour appx, trowel over to smooth out as much as possible. The spray/brush water and go back over to 'finish' the surface smooth.

Will this be likely to end in embarrasment or should I try? Roughly what would a plasterer charge (in Surrey area) to plaster the ceiling in a 24m2 room?

Any advice most appreciated :)

I have handpainted a few old cow's skulls and mounted them on polished wooden shields. They look clean and shiny and I have painted native-american looking deisgns on them, I have left some of the bone exposed, and the bone is a bright white because I bleached it. I am going to take them to an art fair and sell them, how much should I charge for them?

I would like to take old corn crib and convert it to cottage, by removing inner walls. What do I have to do to make sure that the roof does not cave in or how do I beef up the rafters (not buy them), Also is there a good web site to see pictures or drawings. Do I need to beef up the base? It was built in 1950s. HxWxD 12 plus roof by 28 by 32. Roof is probabbly another 10 to12 ft.

I would like wainscoating in my stairway, but am not sure if it would be hard with the angles. Does anyone know if there is a wallpaper that would resemble wainscoating?

I'm looking at a 4 piece leather living room set. The price I was quoted was $2,624 and I asked the salesperson since I was buying the set, would there be a discount? They took off $175. I told him this was still a bit over my budget of $2,000. He said to think about it and call him in the morning, and maybe we could discuss the price then. My question is, Am I crazy for trying to get the best price. I love this set but don't like the price. I would still have to pay tax and delivery. How much more of a discount do you think I could get? I've heard that furniture has a huge markup but I'm not sure how much of the price is negotiable. Thank you for your help.

I have a metal banister/railings leading up my stairway that has been covered with several layers of white paint. I want to strip it down and either leave it natural or paint it a color that coordinates with my house. I do not want to undertake this task myself, and was wondering who I would contact to have it done professionally. Suggestions?

I've bought a painted textile piece that I'd like to have integrated into a simple duvet cover for a queen-sized bed. Any ideas whom I should contact?

I'm trying to find somewhere where I can buy a really low-to-the-ground couch. Not quite on the floor but about 8" to about 1.5 feet off the ground. And I mean that is hight is where the cushions are, not the bottom of the couch. I just need one where i can sit really low. And a low table would be nice to but that's less important.

I am 24 and live in a small suite in my parents house. I have a small bathroom off of a short hallway which leads straight into a living/entertainment room, and a bedroom off of the living area. I am wanting to redecorate, but I have no ideas. I like so many things. I like the soft colors, but I could just as easily go with bold and loud. Just looking for trendy ideas to make these three rooms work together. Please Help!

Even when all three are on, the living room is still not as bright as I'd like it at night. I wish my place had ceiling lights. The shades are a teal color if that makes a difference.

I just thought I'd ask, as new inventions come out everyday? I need to hang curtains over my patio door verticle blinds. If there is nothing new available, guess I'll pull out the old ladder and screwdriver. Curtains make the place feel more homey than just blinds.

I recently purchased a new bedroom set (an antique black color) and am trying to redo the room before it arrives. I'm hoping to paint the walls a buttery yellow color, and I have oak colored hardwood floors. My question is what color would you recommend painting all of the trim (fairly wide trim along the floors, around all windows, doors, and the hope is for crown molding eventually)?? We usually like the starkness of white trim, however it seems as if it would be rather jarring against the black furniture. Any assistance you can offer would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
