I would like to take old corn crib and convert it to cottage, by removing inner walls. What do I have to do to make sure that the roof does not cave in or how do I beef up the rafters (not buy them), Also is there a good web site to see pictures or drawings. Do I need to beef up the base? It was built in 1950s. HxWxD 12 plus roof by 28 by 32. Roof is probabbly another 10 to12 ft.

Load supporting walls need something to support them or the ceiling will fall in. You can use posts where the load supporting walls are now, but beefing up the ceiling is not what I would do, since that would merely make it heavier with less support. We use [my hubby & I] posts where we remove load bearing walls, they are not very expensive, when you think about what the consequences of not having them would be.

I would need to see a pic of your corn crib but in general. Opening up specific areas of the inner walls with the use of some header material would be better then removing completely. Especially if in fact it is tied to roof support, that would be the only way. Some rafter collar ties and purlans would be beneficial for overall strength of roof as well.
