I'm looking at a 4 piece leather living room set. The price I was quoted was $2,624 and I asked the salesperson since I was buying the set, would there be a discount? They took off $175. I told him this was still a bit over my budget of $2,000. He said to think about it and call him in the morning, and maybe we could discuss the price then. My question is, Am I crazy for trying to get the best price. I love this set but don't like the price. I would still have to pay tax and delivery. How much more of a discount do you think I could get? I've heard that furniture has a huge markup but I'm not sure how much of the price is negotiable. Thank you for your help.

Thanks to all for your helpful advice. I bought the furniture without an additional discount and I think I will be happy with it. This website is great http://www.dpbolvw.net/click-1507807-103...
and I'm marking it as one of my favorites. So thanks for sharing that with me. : )

I'm an interior designer, normally designing and selling custom made furniture to clients.
When I moved to this city I took a temporary position as a retail salesperson in the biggest store in the city. It truly opened my eyes!
Furniture is marked up (at the very least)twice the cost. (This cost is landed, meaning what it costs to have it arrive at their back door.)
A salepersons commission is 5-7% of the price. Very rarely will a manager give more than a 2-3% discount.
If you were quoted $2624 for 4 pieces, it can't be good quality. A good leather sofa is $2000 by itself.
Try to find where the home builders sell their model home furniture. You can get great deals for stuff that's hardly been sat on. Also, see if you can find a designer that will take you to a showroom for a small fee. It will be less than retail.
Hope this helps.

Tell him that you love it but it is not in your price range and then throw around some names of other furniture stores and see what he says. Just let him know that the price is the only thing holding you back, and if he does not cave, ask him to throw in some type of warranty, or free delivery or something like that. Act like you can do without it and walk out. Furniture sales people are on commission so when he sees you leaving, commission on $2,000 is better than commission on $0. Trust me, he will work you a deal. And if he doesn't, go somewhere where you can get what you want for the price you can afford.

Furniture retailers double the manufacturer's price (as do retailers of most things).
I've never really heard of reputable retailers haggling over the price, but if this guy says he may give you a better price in the morning, I'd wait and see what he has to say.
I don't think he's going to go down much further cause it will come out of his commission.

Sami,

Check your PennySaver for the guy who sells mattresses at a discount. Ask him for his furniture contact.

Through a coworker, I found The Mattress Guy. He works at the mattress factory and got their off spec mattresses to sell for cheap. I bought a queen pillow top mattress and box spring for $300, due to bad ink (the mattress pattern didn't match the box spring pattern).

When I spoke with him, he told me to go to the store to see the mattresses that he had for sale. When I was there, the lady told me that she could get me furniture for cheap as well. I looked through the catalog and found an entertainment center that I liked. I asked how much, with my price being $2000. Lady said $400!

yes, it's always better- what i would do is I would call the manufacturer to see if they have a discount house, most of them do. Or check on there prices. the bigger the chain the cheaper the price will be also.

Yes, it always makes sense to get the best deal you can. And in this case, I doubt you will get them down to $2000. What you can do though is once they seem to be down as far as they will go, give them alternatives, such as they pay the tax or a portion of it or free delivery. Its always worth a try.

Good luck

Get all of the info, about the maker, etc, and see how much less it is from a discounter in NC. Go to www.blacksfurniture.com You can also ask the salesman when it will go on sale. Ask to talk to the owner or manager and see what he can do.
