I have an old victorian home. The fireplace in the living room has been sealed up & I was wondering if there are any types of candel holders I can mount to the cement to make it look like there is a fire lit. Is there a web site anyone knows about? Thank you!

I was wondering if you can have two different kinds of wood furniture in a room. if the woods are not dramatically different. Is that a nono?

Ah, I can't sleep in this place. And the place next door sounds like a dorm room or frat house. Ugh! Downstairs, the neighbors are just doing regular everyday activity, but the place is so poorly insulated, I can even hear them pretty loudly when they take a shower.

I am just furnishing a small Victorian terraced house that I bought recently and can't afford everything at once but meanwhile really need a good, comfortable chair in which to relax. I don't want to buy just for the sake of getting 'something' but would like to add later. However, all comfortable armchairs/recliners look so old fashioned and boring. Can anyone suggest where I might find a contemporary looking armchair that would fit in with how I have decorated so far; Straw coloured walls; recess walls next to fireplace covered with a darker hessian (sp?) wooden cladding over the chimney brest; a black and chrome focal gas fire (one of those that is flueless and fits on the wall) quite eye catching! laminated floor board type floor. Modern lamps; that's about it so far ... Yes, the house is Victorian but somehow a modern and mellow decor matches my mood at his time in my life!

The wall opposite the front doors is 9' wide and 8' high. It has a 4x6 mirror on it to reflect light from the windows in the doors. Cream tile and pale custard yellow walls with a rust, copper, cream stripped 5x7 rug. There is an 8' long 30" high, mahogany book shelf under the mirror. I could use some suggestions.

Thanks to each and every one with any suggestions.

I honestly think it is a case of one upmanship.2 weeks ago I got tired of it getting dark so early,so I hung some tiny white lights on a ficus tree on my front enclosed porch. She called me Martha Stewart and said that my house really gets noticed now.(Whatever, lady!)

Mostly I did it for my 7 year old son who enjoys it!

I don't know how many feng shui buffs are out there, but here's my question: If using a feng shui color chart for a room, do you use it by associating the bottom of the chart as being 'south' or do you consider the bottom of the chart to align with where the door, or opening to the room is?

I am buying this sofa http://www.mujionline.co.uk/catalogue/catalogue.asp?Sec=2&Sub=8&PID=124 and although its super comfortable, you can't really lie on it diagonally/sideways because it doesn't have armrests. And when you watch a movie you just don't always want to sit upstraight (or lie flat). Was thinking of getting those triangular pillows but they may fall off. Anyone else has creative ideas?

Saw one in a magazine once. Tried looking for online and can't find it. Looking for my older parents so they can still enjoy a bath while not worrying about climbing out the bathtub. Thanks!

I am in the middle of selling 3 of my properties to remodel my grandmothers home. It is a beautiful victorian home with 12 ft. ceilings, and 10 ft. columns it's a beautiful home but there are a few problem with this home. I have one small bathroom, it has no dining room, and 2 bedrooms; we use the foyer as a dining room. I want to go up with this house but I don't know if I can with the columns and the tall ceilings. I really would like to add another bathroom, another bedroom, and a dining room. I would like to make my master bedroom, and bathroom and upstairs and turn my bedroom downstairs into a guest room. Can I do this at a reasonable price?
