Depending on where you live, check out some of the larger hobby shops, like Michael's or Hobby Lobby - choose a couple of colors and work from there.
We usually have a color theme - like Blue and Gold - the tree and all the house decorations are based on these colors. REALLY makes for an elegant and showy presentation. Buy the plain wreaths [green!] and then ribbon and ornaments in your colors and 'build' them up. Get clear bowls and fill them with ball ornaments and/or garland. We usually only put lights around the fireplace mantle and on the tree, but that's not to say you can't or don't have places where it might work out quite well. Candles also make a nice display [we have some nice xmas-type ones].
For setting up, we usually put all of the stuff on the kitchen table [or any large table] and start making the decorations... then start putting up the basics, then the add-ons. Have everything handy that you will need - scissors, glue gun, tape, wire, pliers, push pins, etc.
Experiment- and Have fun!

Put evergreen swags, embellished with red ribbon, over the top of your windows on the outside of your house. Poinsettia garlands could be used anywhere inside your home (over doorways, around the perimeter of your ceiling, around your Christmas tree). A really fun & funky thing to do is buy a few bags of the inexpensive Christmas bows and frame your t.v. set with them! It is really cute, use all of the same color, a combination of your favorites, or all the shades available.
Start a collection of something unique, like nutcrackers, gingerbread people, old world Santas, reindeer, snowmen (can stay out past January!)... Let friends and family know you're collecting them if you want your collection to grow fast. Word of warning though: If you let people know you're collecting something, that's *all* you will recieve :~) If you keep the collection idea to yourself, you can be more particular about what you have.
Check out the brand GelGems to decorate windows and mirrors indoors -they are so cool!
Mix starburst mints (the hard red and white candies) with Hershey Kisses displayed in a bowl - it's really festive and pretty.
Happy Holidays!

Well, in the traditional/elegant category:
1. Get multiple plain green wreaths or swags, add a big red velvet bow and hang on porch columns or on your front windows.
2. Get two small (3') artificial pine trees and put them in oversized flower pots or urns. String with white lights and put them on the front porch at the front door.
3. Buy sparkly fake fruit (pears, apples, etc.) and hang them from festive ribbons on your dining room chandelier.
4. Put garland around your bathroom mirror.
5. Get a swag made for draping over a mailbox. Or, wrap a festive garland around the post.
In the fun category:
1. Get some big cardboard boxes, and put in some bricks. Wrap the boxes with door wrap (the shiny kind) and add huge bows. Stack them up on your front porch.
2. Get a large hurricane or clear vase. Fill in with artificial red and green apples.
3. Take strings of Christmas lights and lay them flat in your landscaping (on the ground, not on the bushes). When it snows, the little lights will glow through the snow.
4. Get stems of silk poinsettias and stick them in a flower pot. Keep it on the front porch.
Have fun decorating for the holidays!
