Cleaning & Laundry - March 2007

I recently moved in to my first apartment. The tub and toilet are older and, therefore, stained. Is there anything I can do about this? I am a clean person and I don't want people thinking otherwise. Thanks! Oh, by the way, the water here has some kind of minerals in it. I don't know what it is, but it tends to stain things green if it sits long enough. I don't know if that helps or not.

We purchased a new 2 seater lounge recently, made from olive green velvet like material. (mental blank as to the correct name.. oops)
I just discovered my kids put a small blue pen mark right in the middle of one of the cushions!
I have been told to use 'rotten milk' but I don't really like that idea as I think that would make a mess that also stinks. Any Ideas? I just don't want to make it worse...

My place is not as bad as some people's on those TV shows. But I want to be really organized. I want everything to shine and be beautiful like in magazines. But its not happening. I have no motivation. It makes me feel bad, particularly since this wasn't how I was raised. In the family I was raised in, everything was spotless. I sometimes get depressed by the fact I can't keep my place as beautiful as the people in my family. I just hate scrubbing and cleaning so much. I get so tired. I wanted to get a cleaning lady, but they are very expensive. And I hear they use the bathroom rags in the kitchen, which is gross. What should I do to be motivated?

We use a humidifier in my 8 month-old son's room and it smells stale. I've changed the filter and we change the water every night, but it still smells sour. And it's definitely the humidifier - not the diaper pail, as I used that humidifier in a different, diaperless room before and got the same smell. Any suggestions?

I have this very nice laptop case with rubber zips, once I had my hands in ashes and I accidentally touched one of these zips, which are made out of rubber. It is now impossible to clean them - I tried with different cleaning liquids and it didn't work. How can I clean these rubber parts?

Thanks in advance,

I am thinking of purchasing a stackable washer/gas dryer for my apt. Is there a way I can hook it to the existing gas pipe that my stove is hooked to, kind of like a "Y" connector set-up. Also, how does one vent the dryer if there is no available window? One more thing...do they come with an attachment to hook-up to a sink faucet? Thanks to all who answer.
