Steam iron = dry clothes, to help remove wrinkles. I use an old windex bottle filled with distilled water to help.

Dry iron = damp clothes that just came out of the dryer.

To set creases, I use a hot, dry iron after dampening with the spray bottle first.

Steam all cottons and linens. This will get all wrinkles out.

Do not use steam on low settings such as silk.. the water will just pour out as the setting is not hot enough to create steam.
It would also leave water marks on those items.

Steam helps release or set a wrinkle. If you are ironing crease in pant legs, use steam. If the wrinkles won't smooth out of your shirt, use steam.
