once a carpet gets wet, all you smell are the odors that have accumulated ,wether you shampood spots or not... my suggestion is to have the entire carpet steam cleaned by a professional... 3 rooms usually undre 200 dollars , servicemaster is a great company to use... also stanley steamer. ask if they can put a deodorizer in while steaming also, harmless to the carpet, but very customer appealing because it makes your house smell fresh while the carpet is wet... it takes a t minimum of 12 hours for the carpet to dry, so make sure you can get around the house after this is done... and after it dries, all you do is vacuum and its like brand new carpet... god luck

Several things can cause a carpet to stink after cleaning. If the smell is sour it probably means that too much water was put in the carpet and not suctioned back out of the carpet and pad. The water will start to sour and make the carpet sour. Steam cleaning by a professional cleaner can help. They use steam to clean the carpet and then remove the excess water. They may also have to deodorize.
I had this problem about three years ago and I rented the "Rug Doctor" and cleaned the carpet and went over it several times with the vacuum portion of the rug doctor to remove the water. Then I put our shop vac on reverse and pushed the nozzle through a small section that I pulled up from the wall. I let the shop vac blow under the carpet for several hours.
Last year I pulled up the carpet and replaced it all with hardwood floors!
Good luck, I hope this helped.

ideally the suitable thank you to get this out could be to have the carpet professionally wiped sparkling, yet that may no longer consistently an decision. right this is a vogue that I each and every each and every now and then use to handle nasty spills on my carpet. positioned some million/4 cup of carpet shampoo or upholstery cleanser in a extensive bowl of warm water and sponge sparkling the 'fishy' spot, getting down into the fibres. those cleaners may be got here across at any branch or ironmongery keep. Rinse with sparkling heat water and a sponge and allow it dry. while dry, sprinkle a beneficiant volume of baking soda on the section and paintings it into the carpet. go away it for extra or less an hour then vacuum thoroughly. The cleanser will get rid of any oil or liquid from the fish and the baking soda will deodorize the carpet, solid luck!

I agree it probably is the dampness of the carpet and carpet pad. I use a professional cleaning service called chem-dry. They don't saturate the carpet so now mildew musty smell. I would call a professional or shampoo again with hot water and simple green. Continue sucking the water out until you are sure there is very little left.

It's probably due to the carpet pad under the carpet. If animal urine or anything unpleasant smelling stained your carpet, it would eventually dry out and stop stinking. Wetting it would bring back the odor.

The water probably didnt all get sucked out, so as it seeps further in it makes a damn sour smell, shampoo again with less water, and use good suction to remove water from the carpet, sprinkle baking soda on it let it dry then vaccumm it

Is your carpet made from wool?
Wool carpets stink terribly when wet, this will cease once the carpet is dry for a few days.

Maybe your mom's carpet was nasty and it was still in the brushes of the carpet cleaner... Maybe it didn't pick up the water and just laid water all of the carpet and started to mold... Maybe you have a lot of animal feces in the carpet..and water and dookie just dont' mix well..
My bet is the cleaner did not pick up the water efficiently and was left to mold..

Water used was probably spoiled. Buy some Oder Ban and use the shampooer again with it instead of shampoo.
