My house sits on a double city lot, 60' wide. There was a house at one time on the second lot. Right now its open yard, but will soon house our 16'x30 addition to our home. My problem is that behind our exisiting house and behind where the house next door used to be my backyard floods. 80% of the yard is grass, the rest is garage and a brick paver patio. We want to build up our yard and grade it so the water runs out of the yard. Does anyone have any general "how tos" for this project? We've got some ideas as well as all of the resources, but want to make sure this is done properly. Should we remove the sod, lay gravel, just top soil, both, leave the sod, should the water run off towards the sides of the yard? The neighbor behind us is also building his yard up in spring, but the neighbors on both sides of us are not. There is limited information on this that I can find. If anyone has a website or can offer advice it would be appreciated!

I took the top off of the tank to see what is going on. When you flush the toilet, the flapper at the bottom that plugs the hole stays up. How do I fix this? My son is three and goes potty by himself and the toilet runs all day until we hear it. Help!!!

I have a mildew smell coming from my Washing Machine. I've checked the connections and find no leaks. I've washed the tub by itself with bleach and cleaned the lid. I only get the smell when I open the lid. I used to get it even when the lid was closed. I'm stumped at what to do.

Our neighbor planted (3 years ago) about 6 trees directly on our property line. We thought nothing of it at the time, but now branches are touching our shed and leaves are falling all over our yard. We want these trees gone! This neighbor is has been unreasonable in other matters, so we will not be able to get him to agree. How should we proceed?

I have a clogged bathroom drainpipe. The sink trap is brand new, so i know the clog is somewhere down the line. A 30 foot snake did not solve the problem, but i fear it is not taking the right path in the pipe, the adjacent toilet and tub drains work. In the basement below the bathroom i see a complex of drain pipes, all connecting to the main drain. There are two or three cleanout plugs that I know are there for a reason, and i have had experience in using these plugs, but the system was PVC. This system is cast iron and maybe 40 years old. My question is this. What is involved in loosening and removing a cleanout plug in a cast iron system? Is it likely to be hopelessly rusted shut? Do I run the risk of cracking loose a soldered joint? Is this an effort that could get me into serious trouble? Looking forward to all the advice I can get............Tom.

It's just cheap particle board piece, jointed with staples and glue, but I really like and want to keep it. Would small angle brackets and a bit of wood glue in the pilot holes hold it during a move [where the tendency is to lift by the top]?

I had someone ask me this question, and since I have never really worked much with bayberry, I wasn't really sure. She told me that the plants are very over grown and "woody" and was wondering if a severe pruning would harm them. I do know that they do put up suckers. I would appreciate any help. Thanks!

There are 2 slats that keep getting pulled loose in the wind. Only happens once in a while, but you guessed it, they're now loose, and flapping again. I've pounded in nails, but is there a better solution?

I've ordered a new shed, which will be delivered flat pack. I'm thinking that, before I assemble it, it would be a good idea to stain the pieces first - that way even the concealed edges will be thoroughly stained. However, the can of stain that I bought says that pressure-treated wood should be allowed to weather for a few weeks before you stain it. I don't understand why. Are sheds pressure treated when they are made? Any suggestions?

Hi, Just discovered this site today. Felt this is really fantastic in helping me address questions that I will find inconvenient or embarrassing to ask friends. I wonder what are yous guys or gals' take on letting the laundromat wash your clothes. I am getting so tired of doing laundry. It is so time consuming and always takes a big chunk of my Saturday, with all these washing, hanging and folding. I have been wanting to use the laundromat drop-off service for a year, but just unsure whether you can trust them, e.g. with more delicate things like blouses or pants or shirts, and it is embarrassing to give underwear to them? Will they wash it clean and treat it like I treat my own clothes? Also since I usually hang my clothes dry to keep them in good shape, will I have to abandon this if I drop off to a laundromat? Any advice on this or on how to fix the laundry conundrum (doing it fast and efficient and make it not such a great burden) is highly appreciated!!

I signed a lease for a house that I am renting. I listed my two nieces as occupants. I pay the rent and the house is rented in my name. I was wanting to know what rights do I have to make them move and how soon can I ask them to move out. Am I required to give them a 30 day notice or can I ask them to move out ASAP.
I no longer want them living there and I want them out immediately but I need to know what options that I have.
