What you have is due to a combination of poor air circulation and cold walls. I would bet your bed is against the outer wall, and the worst location in the closet is also an outside wall.

Walls that are a bit shy on insulation and/or face north can get cold enough to cause water to condense on the inside surface, creating the suitable environment for mold and mildew growth. Air circulation normally prevents this. To get rid of the problem, you need to improve circulation of air to the areas. This can be as simple as pulling things back from the walls, or as complicated as providing for fan or ducts to get more air movement in the area. It may require leaving the closet door open in colder weather as well.

The circulating air warms the wall, and the air in contact with it. That eliminates the condensation, which eliminates the environment that supports mold/mildew growth. It is extremely unlikely that the mildew you see is a serious health hazard, that type is rare. You will need to wash any fabrics that have it, and it will help to wipe the mildewed walls down with a mild bleach solution- 5% or so. Note that the bleach can discolor wallpaper. When washing the walls, be sure and use a fan or source of extra airflow to speed complete drying.

mold inside your house could cause serious health problems, and if it is toxic mold, it could cause death. This is not something to fool around with, you need to find out what is causing the mold and if it is the toxic kind. I would worry about the smell after taking care of the mold itself. You must have a leaky roof, please have it checked asap....

If your mold is that wide-spread, you might want to have your house inspected and professionally treated. It'll be expensive, but it will save you a LOT of headaches, and worse expenses from the hospital.

Good luck!
