It's just cheap particle board piece, jointed with staples and glue, but I really like and want to keep it. Would small angle brackets and a bit of wood glue in the pilot holes hold it during a move [where the tendency is to lift by the top]?

Is there enough room to glue in a square wooden rod? The top of the rod would touch the bottom edge of the top piece. The side of the rod would touch the inside of the chest's side.

The rod would give more surface area to glue to. Particle board is tough to repair. Use a premium quality glue, not just white wood glue, it will do a better job.

I don't think it would hold it well enough throughout the move, but that would be fine for after the move. I would get you some ratcheting cargo straps and secure the top that way for the move. Hope that helps.
