I recently moved into a rent house and would like some ideas about decorating. Of course I can't paint or do anything permanent to the house, but I really want to make it feel comfortable and like home. Any personal ideas you have or websites would be great.

What I need to know is what kind of wood to build the play surface out of and what to coat it with. Will standard pine do the trick, or do I need a harder wood such as maple. Will a simple lacquer provide me with a suitable playing surface, or do I need a polymer or armortop finish. I also am having difficulty deciding how to seal the playing surface. I f I construct a temporary frame around the play surface and pour the sealant on I will be left with a meniscus effect along the edges, this is unacceptable as I need a perfectly flat surface. Sanding the finish down will most certainly damage the playing surface, so how do I go about leveling my edges? What if I contructed a lip that rose only 1/4" above the play surface and let the sealant flow over the edges, thus solving the meniscus effect. Then after removing the frame I could sand only the edges of the play surface leaving the top untouched. Thoughts/answers?

We really want a screen porch, but wish to minimize obscuring our view as much as possible. Can anyone recommend the best screening material that will be very durable (just got a future big dog), that will keep out mosquitoes, and that will provide the best visibility from the inside to the outdoors?

We just bought this house and I don't know anything about wood floors. I love to clean with my swiffer that has the wet pads you put on to mop with and then throw away when you're done. Will it damage my wood floors if I use this on them?

I'm looking at a piece of property that lacks the space for both a septic system and a well. It is rumoured that city water lines will be run to the property within 10 years, but in the meantime, are there any practical, cost-effective alternatives to well water? I was thinking about water storage tanks for domestic use and rainwater collection cisterns for greywater usage. Would having potable water delivered to the tanks via tanker truck be cost-prohibative? Has anyone out there put some sort of alternative system in place?
