In general, you should photograph all of your valuables, and mark as many as you can in some way. Most libraries, or police stations will let you check out an engraver, which can put permanent marks on most any surface. They're hard to write neatly with though, and can lower the value of antiques. You can also use markers with UV ink in them, which will be less obvious, but easier to remove.
It's also considered a good idea to make a list of what valuables you keep where. All of these measures would allow you to recover the value of stolen property if you were insured... and when time and money become available, that's what they're best for. Until then, if you are robbed, this information will be a godsend to the police, and can help them track stuff down.
Should you be robbed, you might also want to pass some of this info on to local pawn shops, and other places that buy stuff, as well as checking around local yard sales to see if anything of yours is being sold. If the police can recover any property, it may serve as a lead to find more property, etc. and you may get the satisfaction of recovering much of your stolen goods. Likewise, if the burglar is arrested, you may be able to file a civil suit to sue them for the damages.
Of course, the best way to do things is to make it harder for a burglar to steal anything. It's often a rather simple matter to bolt down home computers, televisions, and other entertainment devices. Home safes are also becoming rather affordable, and in all honesty, investing a little money into protecting what you have is generally a very good idea.

Nope. That's what the insurance is for. The only way to get anything is if they catch the person who broke in, and make them pay restitution.
Also, if you took out a mortgage and do not have homeowner's insurance, your bank will FREAK OUT on you if they find out.
So, take the time! Call your agent, and at least get a rider in place for the value of the home until they can come out and inspect.
Good luck!

Homeowners insurance does cover theft. Most likely with a $500 deductible. Keep in mind most policies do put a dollar limit of $1000+ on jewelry, so if you have anything of value there, inquire about any available coverages for that (Personal Articles Floater/Inland Marine Policy).
