For the last few days my hall by the bathroom has been smelling like a mixture of iron and the outdoors and it very strong during the morning and less strong as the day goes on. I can see some slight water mark on the other side of the wall in the kitchen (no smell or softness found there) but I cannot figure out if the smell is coming from outside and somehow getting into my house (no windows there) or if it's mildew. How can I tell? Is there a specific type of mildew that smells like I described? PLEASE SOMEONE HELP ME!!! The smell is sickningly strong and I don't know how long I can take it.

the width removed will be approximately 10 feet and, so as not to damage perfect original coving, i am planning on leaving approx 20 inches below the ceiling line. i was supposing i would then simply put a long 4x2, supported at each side, to make the bottom of the "arch" (which will be square) but will i need a lintel (non load bearing) to ensure that this stays square. I am assuming I need something to effectively prevent the top of the 4x2 vertical studs from falling down on themselves,as they will needto remain in situ because I am leaving the top part of the wall.

Does anyone know how I could fix this? I think part of the reason why it is doing this is because the people that lived in my house before me never used the system so all of the sprinkler heads were buried so I had to find them all and what not, so im guessing they just got dirty inside the head so they dont slide back down after the system shuts down. If anyone knows an easy way I could fix this please let me know.
