Does anyone know how I could fix this? I think part of the reason why it is doing this is because the people that lived in my house before me never used the system so all of the sprinkler heads were buried so I had to find them all and what not, so im guessing they just got dirty inside the head so they dont slide back down after the system shuts down. If anyone knows an easy way I could fix this please let me know.

You can easily unscrew the top of the head by turning counter-clockwise. Then lift the internal mechanism out of the housing. If there are any obstructions you should be able to detect them by working the pop-up head up and down, and cleaning out the interior of the housing. Make sure you have removed the sod and soil away from your work area to keep from dumping debris into the head.

While you have the head off, this would be a good time to clean out the nozzle, either by blowing through it or sticking in a wire or pin to dislodge any obstructions.

It is important to keep the top of the head free of grass runners that can keep the head from popping up. Don't forget to clean out the screen near your main inlet to the system.

If the operation of your sprinkler heads are continually plagued with clogs from debris, you may have to remove the heads and purge the system to "clean out the pipes". If this is still not effective, there is a possibility of a well problem.

It's sand in the system. Just remove the head and flush it out and rinse the head. Or replace the heads with new geared models.
