I'm pretty handy at DIY but are there any snags in doing it myself and do I have to get planning permission?

Everything has to do with the layout of your home and the local laws where you live. There are some communities in the US where you have to get a building permit to replace a broken water heater!

You will need a proper foundation for your conservatory and plan for drainage of rain water away from the foundation, so it does not heave and crack in the winter. Obviously, the point where the conservatory's roof attaches to the house must be well sealed and flashed properly. All that glass can make for noisy sound reflections, so you might want to have acoustical blinds or curtains to make it less nerve-wracking on the ears. Finally make sure there is good ventilation. If your conservatory will be sited where it will warm up in the winter sun, provide for a fan to move some of the warm air into your home.

Check with your local building dept. One middle ground is to find a lic. who will be willing to let you do some of the work. The contractor would perform certain, pre-determined parts of the project, and you could handle those aspects that you (and he) feel you can handle. Working alongside an experienced builder is a great learning experience, making you better able to handle future projects. Plus, you'll get the satisfaction of being involved in the current job, while having the safety net of using the builder. The trick is to find a good builder who will agree to this, and to be sure to have everything in writing.

There really shouldn't be to many snags for such a project, just as long as you double or even triple check all your measurements (old rule of thumb, measure twice cut once) as for planning permits, you will have to check with your city or town you live in, My dad had built a garage out in his back yard and he had to have a zoning and building permit with detail drawings. I know it might sound like a bunch of bull crap but it's better to be safe than sorry, because they can make you tear it all down and possibly fine you for it, hope everything works out well with your project.
