apparently, painters failed to remove immediately the varnish that dripped on my hardwood floor when they were varnishing my oak stair.

Use a varnish thinner. Apply to a lint free cloth (like cloth diapers) and wipe over the varnish until it is gone. This may take several passes, but it is the best way to do it in my experience and does not ruin the surface. If you do go too far, just use a stain the same color as the wood underneath and seal.

Have you talked to the painters and told them about the problem? I would and tell them they need to fix the problem they created...be nice.

Mineral spirits. Found in the hardware section of WalMart

Use a very fine grit sandpaper and work the drips down slowly.

if the finish is the same gloss as the drops, i would very carefully use a razor layed flat on the floor. just nip the top of the drop, then do it again.
