We really want a screen porch, but wish to minimize obscuring our view as much as possible. Can anyone recommend the best screening material that will be very durable (just got a future big dog), that will keep out mosquitoes, and that will provide the best visibility from the inside to the outdoors?

Is metal better than vinyl for the view or other considerations?
We weren't considering windows because we wanted a true screened porch, rather than a sun room/enclosed porch.

Use a metal screening material for best see-through ability also use black or dark colored for added see through, the metal is also quite durable. make sure you build it with big runs that will minimize the blocking by blocking or whatever you use to hold the screening material, basically you should build it in big 3'x6' panels that contain the screen.

Best Screen For Porch

FORGET ABOUT IT!

With that "future big dog", you KNOW you are going to get into "heartbreaks" when it DOES rip down the screening, and you will want to KILL the dog...(of course, I hope everyone of your family member read this---> I TOLD YOU SO!), Just so that you wont say you werent "warned" and go spastic in wanting to beat the happy mutt, when it wants outside the screening if you have a screen door on it too, or jumps up on the bannisters and rip the screening!

Ok, having said that..for the "critters", I would get an acre and a half bug zapper, (if you have a large back yard, or lots of woods), so that you dont have to worry much about the bugs. (flies and other things, keep the garbage lids on, and dog feces picked up and they will dissapear).

Now, I personally like metal mesh screen. Black or silver, wont matter, if its bright enough outside. I would put them on "removeable hinges". (put hinge on top and bottom, four corners, and by removing the "pin", you can just take the screen down).

Or, you can build frames and have the porch "studded out" so that the frames fit in...either way, your choice.

If you have an overhang on the porch, the dark screen will appear dark, so get silver. No overhang, then get dark. (Shadows tend to make the dark, darker).

I wish you well..

Fiberglas will be less obtrusive to the view but sags over time as does vinyl. Aluminum is ugly and is less transparent but doesn't sag and it'll take a year for the shine to oxidize. Copper and bronze are nice but prohibitive in cost. Put solid panels near the bottom or the dog will go right through the screening. Personally, I would go for the Fiberglas and replace it every couple of years.

Well, you're going to have to pick - visibility, durability?

MY first priority would be screen that would keep out the biting things. Second would be durability so I didn't have to keep replacing it. (and per that - make sure the puppy gets dog school training and will not be unruly)

Then - I'd go and see what fits that bill, and pick what I like best.

you're going to want to go with metal rather than vinyl. Whether you want black or silver may depend on if there's generally more light *inside* the porch, or *outside*.
