Vegetarian & Vegan - November 2007

[Selected]: All categories Food & Drink Vegetarian & Vegan

I use to be on Atkins and lost lots of weight, and I loved being on Atkins it agrees with me. BUT I've turned vegan now coz of what's happening with the animals and all the torture they go through.

Now I am in a pickle, I need a vegan diet that will make me loose weight fast. I am on some medication that makes me put on weight! That's why Atkins was perfect but you can't be on Atkins and vegan!!

Please if you know of a vegan diet do share it with me i am desperate and gaining weight being a vegan.

Many Thanks

I tried a vegetarian diet for awhile but i had to stop because i was low on energy and had problems concentrating. I was afraid it was a protein deficiency. If I drank protein shakes, would that solve any potential protein deficiency problems associated with vegetarianism?

I am assuming that there is no meat in these shakes and i don't care if it has dairy in it.

Many people criticize vegetarians, and claim it is "stupid" to not consider that many civilizations were built on the domestication of cattle. It just seems odd to me people would actually discredit vegetarianism. However, I thought vegetarianism existed just as early as meat eating? So, i guess my question is what is the best response to the common argument against vegetarians?

I have received so many negative responses to the fact that I will be having a vegetarian wedding. Both my fiance and I are lacto-ovo vegetarians and for moral reasons. We would be uncomfortable with serving meat (including fish). But many people think I should accomodate to my guests' preferences. Or else they'll starve (i know, crazy).

I feel that it's only one meal, and vegetarian food does not mean starvation! Quite the opposite, you can eat tons and get your protein (and all other nutrition) quite easily. There's no 'imposing', as it's just one meal. And everyone can enjoy it (I will be having 1-2 vegans, so I'm trying to work around that as well).

I asked this question under the Wedding section, about what people would want at a Vegetarian wedding...got lots of responses dealing with people starving and they wouldn't go and it's rude, etc etc.

For those of you vegetarian couples who had a vegetarian wedding reception, how did you manage it?

My boyfriend invited me over to his Parent's house for Thanksgiving. (A loooong time ago.)
I was informed by his Mother yesterday that they would be skipping the traditional turkey and instead would eat king crab and various sea food dishes.
She then went on to tell me she didn't think there would be anything for me to eat, as I am a vegetarian.
Well, call me a stickler for etiquette, but aren't the hosts supposed to provide the vegetarian guest with something vegetarian to eat?
If they don't want to go out of their way to cook something or pick something up for me, at least my boyfriend should, right?
I told his Mother (who I get along with well, by the way) that I could just pick something up for myself at the store and bring it over. She didn't object.
I don't know if they are completely lacking in manners or if I am just expecting what I think is a normal thing..is it me, or isn't that truly very rude?

i'm a Lacto-Ovo Vegetarian which means i don't eat any type of flesh, but i do eat dairy products and eggs

i want to slowly become a vegan (does not eat flesh, dairy products, or eggs!)

how ever that would mean that i couldn't eat cookies, bread, dough, sandwhiches ect. because bread and other stuff are made with milk

what can i do to get the amonut of nutrition and vitiamins i need to stay healthy without meat, eggs, or milk?

Also tell me everything a vegan needs to know about what to eatt

what substitutes (brands) would u recomend?

and are organic foods more expensive?

I am a strong advocate of humane treatment of animals but there is activism and there is extremism as well as cold blooded hypocrisy. If what is in these two links below is true, then should PETA be trusted and supported? What do you know about hypocrisies and extremism of PETA (please share link)?

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving; the celebratory feast between friends and family. This will be my 26th Thanksgiving, and all the ones that preceded this one were enjoyed with a traditional turkey dinner, whether I was with family or alone. Well, I've been a vegetarian for several months now and I haven't really made any exceptions... But I'm considering making an exception for tomorrow. My reasons for vegetarianism are ethical/spiritual, but in the event of this Thanksgiving dinner with friends, I feel it's an important enough ritual to celebrate in a traditional fashion, especially since the blood has already been shed and many others will be partaking in the animal's flesh. (Whoa, sorry for making it sound so dramatic) Anyways, I'm going to see how I feel about it tomorrow before I really decide what I'm going to do... In the meantime, I'd love to hear your feedback. Also, will eating meat actually make me sick if I haven't had it for a while? Thanks.

I want to be vegan, but I'm 14, and my mom obviously pays for things. Is there some kind of website that shows you which stores have certain vegan things. Like I need to find a store near me that sells vegan cheese, egg replacers, vegan margarine, etc. Mostly I'm having a hard time finding the dairy-type products that are vegan. It needs to be somewhere near me like Food Lion, Publix, Wal Mart, Ingles, etc. Please help.

I've been trying to cook with a lot of tofu lately (mostly extra firm). All the dishes have turned out ok. But I think my biggest problem is that I can't figure out the best way to drain it. Any way I cook it, it still ends up really soft. I'm currently baking some right now that was marinaded in soy sauce. So, what is the best way to drain tofu????

Another quick question... Does anybody know of any tofu recipes that are really sweet, yet simple? Something to snack on when my girlfriend and I move in together and don't feel like cooking. Thanks!

I´ve seen pigeons eat chicken, dogs prefer stakes and bones rather than dogchow, cats prefer fish than canned food, animals in the wild eating other animals rather than eating vegetables or fruit (birds eat insects, apes eat insects, insects eat insects), etc... then why shouldn´t the humans eat other animals?

A question for the vegetarians...what is the meat that might just STOP you from being a good vegetarian? The meat that if you were to try it it might just give you the bad habit of going back to being an omnivore?

I have been a vegan since Sept 3rd 2007 but I've lost some weight and fat off of my body. I'm 21 years old 5 feet 90 pounds and no matter how much I eat, I've always weighed about the same since I was 12. Well the other day my husband noticed that my rib cage and hip/back bones are sticking out more, and that I've still been hungry 30 minutes after eating a meal. He's worried about my health and wants me to go back to being vegetarian, unless someone has any ideas? The doctors said I might be anemic. I loved being vegan but they're worried about my health. I take vegan multivitamins/mineral supplement, so what's wrong?
