Most meat-eating people will describe certain foods as “it tastes like chicken”; It has almost became a catch-phrase. My question is - what do vegetarians and vegans use as their phrase to describe other foods??

So my brown thumb and I are going for take 2 on growing our own vegetables.

I had a tiny bit of success last year and managed to grow some broccoli, a couple of zucchinis and 1 yellow squash.

My issue is this:
If my broccoli (or tomato or pepper) row is successful, I now have… what, maybe 2 weeks to eat 9 or so heads of broccoli before it goes bad?

Is there anything I can do to enjoy the vegetables of my labor for longer? I could probably freeze broccoli, but I can’t freeze tomatoes.

I work so hard, and I want to be able to enjoy the things I grow.

P.S. I have asked this in the garden section also, but surely there are some green thumbs among the vegetarians.

:)

Does my wheat pasta count as a *whole grain*?
And what is the difference?

When I read the labels of my standard pasta and my wheat pasta, there seems to be no real difference except my non-wheat also has thiamin, niacin, riboflavin and folic acid, and the wheat does not. Non-wheat also has a bit more iron.

Oh yes, and is there in issue with most of my *whole* grains coming from wheat? You know, wheat bread, brown rice, wheat pasta etc..

Just trying to make my grains, whole grains.

I have been slowly dropping dairy from my diet, but most substitutes seem to by soy. I am switching my soymilk to rice, but what else is there? I already love tofu, and I sometimes eat meat substitutes, so I would like some non-soy subs.

Fake cheese is soy. If I want yogurt, I only see soy. Bagel and cream cheese, soy soy soy…

Am I missing other options? I really like having cheese, cereal, yogurt etc., but I don’t want to have that much of one kind of food in my diet.

Just curious.
Soon I will have to call myself a *soyatarian* so I can have my own made-up word.
:)

It appears that the vegetarian - vegan section is rather small, and one gets to know the Ids of other members posting here quite soon. Being a vegetarian or vegan is a choice everyone made for himself, so I really get fed up with these insults, presumptions and accusations here. I believe this to be a board for exchanging questions and answers related to the topic and not the playground for people with psychological problems. As a vegan I don't go to other boards and insult meat eaters. So why do we have to keep up with these intolerance, being called a "dangerous cult" etc?
I just reported someone who keeps posting nonsense and insults concerning vegans and would like your opinion: do we have to deal with that? What is wrong with these people?

So I'd like to make dinner for my housemates, but they are all vegetarians, and I'm so totally not. Any suggestions? Please be thorough. (Also, there is a little kid, so it should be something kids will eat too.)

(This is a serious question, I'm just a bit daft on the subject, I'm not being rude.)

I have never tried either, and I was just wondering.. Which one is better for you healthwise? Are there different kinds I should know about? What kinds are good for doing what? Which one tastes better? Are they basically the same thing, or should I include both in my diet?

Yeah. Sorry that was alot of questions.

Well.. I have only been vegetarian for about a week now, although my whole life I have never really been much of a meat eater anyway. I just ate chicken when it was put in front of me and I made tuna sandwiches for lunch sometimes. After watching "meet your meat" today, I threw up.. I just can't handle what they do to those animals.

How would I make the transition from being vegetarian to becoming vegan? Is there cheese that is not made from animals? And if there is.. Would that even be healthy? Wouldn't it be just a bunch of chemicals?

Also, I don't want to get bored with being vegan and eat the same foods all the time. What can I include for variety, and how to prepare it. I am not familiar with strange vegetables. Any help would be appreciated. Sorry this is kind of lengthy.

get the b12?
http://www.vegsoc.org/info/b12.html
it says here that vegans should take vegan supplements, as scientists arent sure if b12 can come from a plant source.
Well then where do they get b12 for the vitamin? do they synthesize it? how?
I know vegans are healthy, im just curious where the supplements get their b12

Hi: I'm wanting to go organic/natural not only with food but cleansers and what not, mainly products that do not test on animals. My main concern is that I have oily/acne prone skin at the age of 25, I have to use products that contain salicylic acid; currently I'm using Oil of Olay Acne Treament which is working wonders, but I read that the company tests on animals. Does anyone know of a organic/natural alternative to salicylic acid face wash? Something that is not too expensive? Thanks a bunch:)!!
