i know quite a few vegetarians. yesterday, at one of my jobs, i was asked if i tried the new steak sandwich thing. i said that i wasn't interested.

mind you, i'm not a vegetarian. quite the opposite.

anyway, this girl that's a vegetarian, she says to me "are you sure you don't want to try it?"

i jokingly replied "yes, i'm sure, do YOU want to try it?"

she said she wasn't interested in murdering an animal

far as i know... the animal had been dead for some time now. how is "meat is murder" an appropriate saying at any point in time?

Okay, so I know that mushrooms grow in manure and they usually have a nice amount of debris on them when you buy them in the package. I've been told that you are not supposed to get them wet or they will soak up the water like a sponge and get ruined.

So, how the heck are you supposed to clean them to get the manure off? If I'm not mistaken, manure causes ecoli (similar to the recent spinach outbreak).

Greenghost, maybe you know?

Eggwhites (primarily ovalbumin in composition) can be beaten because the ovalbumin protein partly unfolds under shear stress to form an excellent surfactant (it makes bubbles.)

Further, ovalbumin denatures nicely with a moderate amount of heat, and those beaten bubbles can, with the inclusion of a little starch or fiber, become structurally stable.

Both these properties are important to me, since I require a very low-carb diet. A low-carb diet means that if I want anything that looks like a baked good I have to rise it with beaten egg-whites and hold it up with insoluble fiber. Ergo, beaten egg-whites are the only thing that keeps me from being vegan.

Various polysaccharides work as a surfactant and make plenty of bubbles, but those bubbles seem to have no stability when cooked. I presume because being polysaccharides they do not denature.

I *think* this unfoldability is on account of ovalbumin being in the serapin protein family, but I don't know.

I have just found this definition on Biology-online.org:

Pescovegetarian: A vegetarian who consumes dairy products, eggs, and fish, but does not consume other animal flesh.

Whilst I don't eat meat (including fish) I do eat dairy products and eggs. I also buy leather shoes, but this is usually because I forget to look until I'm confronted by the leather logo after I've brought them home!!

So because I eat eggs and dairy products does this make me a vegetarian or a pescovegetarian - or something else altogether?

As we all know, the Bush administration now treats vegan extremist groups as they would Al Qaeda. Last year, the FBI deputy said vegan extremist groups—along with the ALF and an aggressive animal-liberation outfit called Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty—the nation's "number-one domestic terrorism threat.

Folks, that is pretty serious. Does anyone have any advice on how we can protect ourselves from extremist like this?

I have a question about vegetarians and vegans. Do you eat eggs, or are those considered meat? I know they come from animals, but nobody dies when they're eaten.
Real answers please. I really would like to know.

Thanks to everyone who answered my previous question about vegetarianism btw, I was very reassured about my decision & I've nearly gone three weeks as a veggie and fully intend to carry on for the rest of my life! Anyway on to this question, are there any simple vegetarian recipies that taste yummy? I'm having a little difficulty with deciding what to eat, I'm getting lots of vegetables especially spinach for iron as well as quorn (meat subsitute) etc. But none of it tastes good! I'm prepared to accept blander meals, however, would prefer some tasty veggie treats! Any advice?

Becoming vegetarians was a decision my husband and I made when we had our first child. After a few years, I discovered that he was eating meat. Besides feeling lied to, I lost my desire to kiss him, or touch him, or anything else. Has anyone else had a similar experience, or can offer me advice?

I work full time. I go to school full time. I do homework when I am not working or at school.

It seems when I am not doing these things, I am sitting on the couch playing with my computer. I don’t have tons of energy to do other things these days.

I drink coffee, and I know that is bad for wanting more energy… but I like it very much.
And unfortunately, more sleep isn’t usually much of an option.

What foods do you eat, herbs do you use, drinks do you drink if you want to have more energy?

Please don’t give me rude meat-eating answers. Meat does not give you energy.

:)
