Does anyone have a list of good vegan/vegi red wines in the UK? Or, does anyone know if there are any good lists of red wines available in Asda or Tesco?

And no not all wine is vegi at all. Wine is clarified, or cleared, after fermentation. Some of the ingredients used include:

- edible gelatins (made from bones)
- isinglass (made from the swim bladders of fish)
- casein and potassium caseinate (milk proteins)
- animal albumin (egg albumin and dried blood powder)

So, Patrick, think before you post such naive/pointless/ill-conceived replies!!

Patrick (again!): I work professionally as a forensic analyst. As such I do have an insight into such things. You will also find that the cleansing products are well documented (whether sourced from the Internet or not). Please do a bit of research before 'answering questions' in which you are obviously well out of your depth. If you would like to answer a question on animal welfare then perhaps consider animal low-life, you should be good at that :-O

Paterick: Oh, and the question was NOT, why isn't wine vegetarian. Please read the question properly before 'answering'.

The safest solution is to go for kosher wines. The bigger Tesco and large Sainsbury stores stock them, or shop at a kosher store (Golders Green etc)
The Vegan Wine Guide has a large list of wines suitable for vegans. VNV Victoria has a list of mainly Australian wines and spirits. Many supermarkets provide details on their websites of which wines are suitable for vegans - Tesco, Asda. Some off-licenses and supermarkets offer a list of wines (and other products) which are suitable for vegans by e-mailing or telephoning them, e.g., Odd Bins, Threshers, Co-op. The Vegan Society's Animal Free Shopper is now available online (free registration is required to access it), listing a number of wines suitable for vegans.

You can check out this link for offers on vegan wines at Tesco's.

French wine is generally overated and overpriced. Napoleon got really miffed as he could not cross the Channel and try some really up and coming English Wines. Best French wines I have found are from Fitou but need a bit of age. As for North Africa - well EU stopped import of Algerian wine into France to beef up the body of French Wines so go for Chateau Musar - Lebanon - pricey and not produced every year - depends on where the bullets are flying as to whether the grapes are picked or not. Enjoy whatever you drink.

I'm confused!? Aren't ALL wines made from grapes or some other type of fruit? Please don't tell me there are meat products in wines!

Holy cow! (or is that a poor choice of words)? I had NO IDEA that there were actually animal-based products used in the clarification (?) of wine! Thanks for the info. I have a few friends who will be very interested to hear this!

I found these at this website (lots more, too):
