Mmm .. avocados .. my mom was the one who taught me how to pick out a good avocado. She had two criteria: 1) You want the skin to be a dark color, too light means it is not ripe enough, and too dark means it has spoiled and 2) You have to figure out the squishiness (for lack of a better word). Try and find one that is still a little firm but when the right amount of pressure is applied you can easily squish it. Although I wouldnt actually squish it. Too firm of an avocado means it is not rip enough and will taste very gross, while to squishy means it is spoiled
So remember
1) dark colored skin (almost black)
2) a little firm but easily squished
And honestly, it will take practice and you will just have to test it.
Happy Hunting!

You want them to be green and somewhat solid and firm. Not too mushy. The softer they are the quicker you have to eat then. Avocados don't really last that long, even in the fridge. Check at the ends, sort of like you do when you buy a melon.

Bigger is better because you get more, Hass avocadoes useually have smaller seeds so once again you get more, it should not be molding where the stem is, it should give a little to the touch similarly to a pear when it's ripe. It should not have any soft spots or hard spots or indentations.

If you want to use it right away it should be pretty soft when you press it. If it is not ripe enough you can put it in a paper bag to ripen.
