Does my wheat pasta count as a *whole grain*?
And what is the difference?

When I read the labels of my standard pasta and my wheat pasta, there seems to be no real difference except my non-wheat also has thiamin, niacin, riboflavin and folic acid, and the wheat does not. Non-wheat also has a bit more iron.

Oh yes, and is there in issue with most of my *whole* grains coming from wheat? You know, wheat bread, brown rice, wheat pasta etc..

Just trying to make my grains, whole grains.

There is a difference between wheat pasta and whole wheat pasta. Just like there's a difference between wheat bread and whole wheat bread. Wheat flour and whole wheat flour.

Wheat pasta is made from wheat flour. Wheat flour has had the germ removed.

You see, the "germ" germinates. That's what makes the grain sprout. That's why sprouts are so good for you. Nutrition! The germ carries all the nutrition any seed needs to sprout and grow.

If we want grain and / or flour to sit in storage forever and a day, we remove the germ. With it, essential nutrients.

Now that we know how important the germ is to our own health, why is it still removed? So manufacturers can sell is separately and make more money. That's my very jaded thinking on the subject. Also a huge percentage of the population really wants food that sits in their pantries forever. They only want to stop the hunger pangs. They don't want nutrition.

So sad.

Whole wheat pasta is made from whole wheat flour, which came from grain with the germ intact. This makes it a better source of nutrition.

make your own pasta. it's just flour, water and salt; sometimes egg. buy whole wheat flour to make it. voila, whole wheat pasta. whole wheat is whole grain.

whole grains are unrefined, they haven't been stripped of their outer fiber. you can use whole grains in a variety of ways. try to explore some grains besides wheat. there is such a thing as too much wheat. enjoy oats and barley. there is no such thing as too much rice. you can practically live on rice.

Had some last night. Whole wheat also has double the fiber which is a plus.
