I have been slowly dropping dairy from my diet, but most substitutes seem to by soy. I am switching my soymilk to rice, but what else is there? I already love tofu, and I sometimes eat meat substitutes, so I would like some non-soy subs.

Fake cheese is soy. If I want yogurt, I only see soy. Bagel and cream cheese, soy soy soy…

Am I missing other options? I really like having cheese, cereal, yogurt etc., but I don’t want to have that much of one kind of food in my diet.

Just curious.
Soon I will have to call myself a *soyatarian* so I can have my own made-up word.
:)

I went through a similiar transition.
One way of limiting soy is using
seitan the wheat product.

A way to get a cheese flavor is by
sprinkling nutrional yeast on things.

Mashing kidney beans to a curd
and mixing them with nutrional
yeast can create a cheese like
type topping also.

You can also find soy-free tempeh
and make subs out of it.

Here's an example of a high protein
meal with no soy:

Green salad with sesame seeds, walnuts,
kidney beans, raisens, black beans, tbsp
of nutrional yeast. topped with tahini sauce.

Ok, well the tahini has a little soy but you can
substitute with another vegan salad dressing.
Just wanted to pitch an idea.

Hope that helped.

There is rice-based cheese substitute as well, and you can get rice-based milk and nut-based milk like Almond Dream that are pleasant on cereal and in many dishes as well. Some people make a cheese substitute from nutritional yeast, as in The Farm Cookbook.

Yogurts may be limited but you could always try making your own from other milks.

I like tofu and tempeh, but soymilk is just gross to me.

There are definitely dairy substitutes out there with bases other than soy, but they are harder to find. Try looking for a veg specialty store in your area.

Have you considered RAW milk and cheese? I am highly allergic to commercial milk, but I do great with raw milk, butter and cheese. You can google raw milk for info and resources, or look at the files section on http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/foodallergynetwork/

I would avoid the soy, if I were you. 90% of the soy produced in america is genetically modified, and now contains genes of wheat, pesticide, scorpion, and who knows what else. It has been modified to the point that the soy can no longer be isolated. It is highly toxic.

theres also rice dream rice cream, yum!!!
tempeh is less processed than most fake meat and is just as good if you marinat3e it right.
dont eat too much processed soy, its high in sodium! so only eat it as a treat, but lots of tofu, soymilk, tempeh and other traditional soy products are good and high in calcium!
also rice dream makes other soyless frozen desserts
