I was attempting to make chocolate brownies and got the whole recipe ready and then realised that I had no baking powder! Is it okay to cook the brownies without them? Will it wreck the brownies?

My mom, God rest her, had many virtues, but baking was not among them. She didn't believe anything from the oven was truly done until it was all shiny & black, and that is NOT an exaggeration!

(Hmm, could this be the origin of my long love affair with sushi...?)

....But, I loved her fried fish!

I was working in a wine bar last week - serving wine produced at the owner's personal vineyard. At the end of the night I noticed that in the empty bottles of the house red wine was dark solid deposit - like a residue? what do you think it was and what are the causes?
