You can eat the skin and it is good for you. It provides you with fiber, which you need to keep your digestive system working properly (in layman's term: helps you push everything through your intestines and out that you don't need). Just wash the apple before eatting it.

If you're picking them off the tree they will have a *slight* amount of natural wax and there are no reported health problems with it. If you're picking them off a grocers shelf they have a coating of petroleum based paraffin wax to keep them from drying out. The FDA says that paraffin is "Generally recognized as safe"; If you trust the FDA (and the lobbyists that 'help' set their policy's) eat it. Otherwise use a good organic soap to thoroughly wash all the wax off.

If you read the signs (i.e. Wal-Mart) it says something along the lines of "waxed to preserve freshness, wash before eating"

So, yes you can eat the peel and it's healthy, but you want to wash it first.

The peel is good for you, the wax won't hurt you. I'd leave the peel on.

Having worked in Produce, I can tell you there is no wax on apples, they wax turnips and cars, they use a type of food grade vegetable oil, mineral based.

It is applied after the fruit is graded, size and before packaged to be sold, it is not a harmful product.
