I was attempting to make chocolate brownies and got the whole recipe ready and then realised that I had no baking powder! Is it okay to cook the brownies without them? Will it wreck the brownies?

I googled baking powder substitute, and I found this:
http://www.cdkitchen.com/features/tip/253/Baking-powder-substitute

so, for 1 tsp:
1/4 teaspoon baking soda plus 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
or
1/4 teaspoon baking soda plus 1/2 cup buttermilk, sour cream or yogurt (to replace 1/2 cup liquid called for in recipe)

You'll end up with some very 'fudgy' brownies! The baking powder creates air bubbles when heated. If all else fails crank you're mixer up to high to get lots of air into the batter; then get it panned and into the oven fast. That's how cooking worked before B.P. was invented in the late 1800's (except back then you needed *really* strong arms).

They will be flat. Best to put the batter in the fridge and go to the store. You might be able to use baking soda but I'm not sure how much and it's a lot saltier.

I don't know, but what you COULD do is go online...go to ask.com and ask this question..

"Is there a substitute for baking powder in cooking?"

Try it, I bet you'll find you answer.
