I am sitting here thinking of ways to make our homes more efficient and help reduce our waste of energy. As I look in my own home I cant help but notice all the energy being wasted and hey I want my gas and electric bill to be cheaper. There are many things that just waste energy. Such as; (1) why dont we use the heat that is being blown out of our furnace into the atmosphere more wisely. We all know our furnace chimneys get very hot and why are we not taking that heat (energy) and converting back into electricity. Even the Cloths dryer is just blowing that heat or energry back outside, the dishwasher is kicking off steam too. Couldn't we use this heat to harness more electricty. Maybe power a steam motor that will put power back into our homes and in turn making our appliances more efficient. Even when I fluch the toilet I set that lovely water swirally around and thats energy thats just being flushed away. Cont...

In most of the US east of the Mississippi, grassy fields, if left alone, become pine and eventually hardwood forest in a few decades. Why do forests not intrude into the plains states? I suspect it has to do with pH, rainfall amounts, natural disturbances such as grazing and fire, but I don't know.

I need four "Yes Arguments" and four "No Arguments". No statistics needed just basic information and arguments to say yes toxic chemcials cause cancer and no they don't cause cancer. Thanks so much:)

People are always like "You're killing a tree" when there's not a whole lot of text on it. I was just wondering how many sheets of paper someone like say Georgia Pacific can make out of the average tree they use to make paper.

Solar, wind, nuclear, geothermal, and hydro- power are all different alternatives for combustible fuel sources. In today's world, where global warming and pollution require our utmost attention, what are the best ways to preserve and protect our planet and its resources?

Most people, in spite of all of the evidence that we are destroying our environment, will not take the steps necessary to reduce their impact. It either takes too much time, too much money, too much research, etc. We, as a society, need to figure out what would motivate people to make these changes. Is it only money? Are there other motivators? What would get you to actually go out today, sell your car and buy a hybrid? What would get you to actually go out today, and buy a more enrgy efficient refrigerator or replace all of the lightbulbs in your house with compact fluorescent lightbulbs?

It seems global warming is widely accepted as truth, but I have heard some contraversy on the subject. I was wondering if you yourself had studied the other side of things. In case you don't have any information, I've taken some out of a Science book I own:

"Recently, special attention has been focused on carbon dioxide (CO2) & its contribution to the greenhouse effect. CO2 is a common byproduct of several natural & artificial processes. It is produced by people and animals, by decaying vegetation, by burning of wood & fossil fuels, & by many factories; it is also emitted by hot springs, volcanoes, automobiles, & power plants. Nature contributes about 200 billion tons of CO2 to the atmosphere annually, while mankind contributes another 7 billion tons--3.5% of the total. CO2 is removed from the atmosphere by plants, ocean plankton, coral, & natural chemical processes.
A closer look at the issue reveals a surprising lack of evidence for a global crisis."

What major impact do oil spills create? What was the most devastating oil spill that has ever happened and what type of wild life did it effect? Are they bad over a short period of time or over the long run?

I found it incredible whilst watching the scavengers at Branscombe beach after the 'Napoli' disaster to see people even grabbing training shoes and many other objects that surely can be manufactured in this country. Nappies must have taken the biscuit, fancy having to import them. If more was made here surely the unemployment rate would go down!

We are drilling boreholes in the Adriatic Sea, east to Ravenna in Croatian water. During drilling we had a H2S gas alarm but the detector is broken now. Our client on board claims there is never H2s detected in he Adriatic sea, around that area. how can we prove that before any victims fallen.

I know there seems like an obvious answer--of course, a hybrid apparently has less negative impact on the environment than my gas-guzzling SUV. But does the potential gain in fuel-efficiency/lower emissions outweigh the impact of getting rid of my current car--which will either be bought as a used car and keep spewing exhaust in addition to my brand new car or--perhaps worse--just sit in a junkyard and become a giant piece of litter? Of course, there's a social impact--if everyone keeps driving their SUVs instead of replacing them, it reinforces the SUV's place on our roads instead of encouraging people to look for something more eco-friendly. Some could argue owning a car at all is bad. For what it's worth, I don't know if there's a right answer. Also, whether I own the SUV or a hybrid, I'd still use it pretty rarely and would walk or take public transportation as much as possible. Thanks for any responses.

Please could people turn thier thermostats down 3 or more degrees if the have one. this may sound silly, but it isnt. 3 degrees of central heating releases1 ton of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere every year. turn it down to help combat global warming. You may be thinking that this will only work if everybody does this, so there's no point in doing this yourself, but there is, because the only reason people think that is because everyboy thinks that. if you dont think that, there is 1 ton less carbon dioxide in the atmasphere each year, or more if you take it down even more. go to http://www.worldviewofglobalwarming.org/ to see some of the effets of global warning, if that doesnt encourage you, type it in any search engine, because global warming could happen in 30 years if nobody tries to stop it, so most of you will still be alive by then, so you cant say you're not going to do it because you'll be dead by then. please answer this if you have turned it down by 3 or more degrees.
