*sarcasm on*
We'll all be dead...because humans are obviously just too stupid to adapt to changing conditions. How on Earth we survived an ice age is beyond me. Global plagues...global wars...volcanoes...earthquakes...tsunamis...the list goes on of challenges we have overcome and not only survived, but thrived. But, nooooooo, we'll just NEVER adapt if we can't get our fix of crude oil from beneath the ground.
*sarcasm off*
Frankly, I imagined a world much like it is today, only with more advanced technology and a wider variety of energy sources...but good ol' oil is going to be around for a long time. Three reasons...it's cheap, it's extremely useful for much more than energy, and it's not nearly as scarce as you have been led to believe.

I have lived in the small villages in Bangladesh on the banks of a mighty river, where the only fuel is what is foraged from the nature. No fossil fuel, beleive me. It is basically an agriculture society where all agriculture activities is driven by human power or animals.
I am now a Chemical Engineer working in the most sophisticated workplace where effecient consumption of fossil fuel is of prime importance. I have seen both the worlds.
When I go back to my small village, I do not have to imagine of a world without fossil fuel, I can see it all around me.
Life is slow, life is short, life is mysterious. There is degradation of the environment because the people are cutting down trees for their fuel needs. With no fossil fuel there is no effecient transport system. People do not go out of their village and consequently they have no idea of the world around them. Any medical emergency is really a matter of life and death because of the inability to shift people to better medical facilities.
I cannot imagine of a world withour fossil fuel and we had better start developing alternate sources of energy such as solar energy, fission or whatever, if we want a world 50 years from now.

Less polluted and less crowded with healthier people.
01 - Obviously 'less pollution' speaks for itself.
02 - Less people because for the first 5 years the world would go crazy and all "post-apocolyptic" with everyone panicking and fighting over what oil supplies remained.
03 - Healthier because we might have to resort to self propelled means of transport.
This is a very hypothetical situation. Assuming that technology can compensate for a lack of some natural resources, the world may be no different at all. Although it will probably grind space exploration to a halt.

we do not need fossil fuel AT ALL
how do you imagine the world after 50 years with no freedom of press???

I imagine it as either using wind and solar energies becasue they are more efficient and do no harm to the environment. Fossile fuels use up sources and har our atmosphere along with our health.

The current world-wide production of crude oil is approximately 1 cubic mile. To equal the energy content of this volume would require
* 2500 nuclear power plants.
or
* 200 - Three Gorges Dams.
or
* 4.6 Billion solar panels.
or
* 1.6 Million wind turbines.
Take your pick.

No worry, before it happen we try to tap some other better source of energy, such as nuclear, solar, hydrogen or hard water.
