Please could people turn thier thermostats down 3 or more degrees if the have one. this may sound silly, but it isnt. 3 degrees of central heating releases1 ton of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere every year. turn it down to help combat global warming. You may be thinking that this will only work if everybody does this, so there's no point in doing this yourself, but there is, because the only reason people think that is because everyboy thinks that. if you dont think that, there is 1 ton less carbon dioxide in the atmasphere each year, or more if you take it down even more. go to http://www.worldviewofglobalwarming.org/ to see some of the effets of global warning, if that doesnt encourage you, type it in any search engine, because global warming could happen in 30 years if nobody tries to stop it, so most of you will still be alive by then, so you cant say you're not going to do it because you'll be dead by then. please answer this if you have turned it down by 3 or more degrees.

ok, maybe we dont want people going down to 0 degrees, but if its ok with you, if you want, only turn it down 1 degree, it'll still help.

it may not make a very big difference if you turn the heating down, but i've already got 35 answers for this question (at the moment), and wheneverer the time runs out for this question, i'm going to put it back on again, but if all the people that answer this turn down the heating, it will make a difference. I havent even got central heating, but i still help in other ways, it would be better if you tried to help in other ways if you dont already.

i already have the thermosat turned down to a reasonable level.
But the effects of global warming will come regardless of anyone's efforts. It doesn't mean we shouldn't try, but there are so many huge factors that affect the world population that it is naive to think that we can control it. There isn't much that we can control on a global scale. Then we have to deal with the prophecy of the end of the earth as we know it by fire as described in the book of 2 Peter. So it would make a whole lot more sense to me to be prepared for that. Which means make sure that you are right with God. You won't be able to endure the fire...

Unfortunately, I don't have a thermostat - I have Economy 7 storage heaters, but I am aware of this problem. I have turned my living room heater down, and my bedroom heater off (well, if I'm in the bedroom I'm usually snuggled up under my duvet!).

What you didn't mention is the light bulb thing - if everybody switched to the low energy type and turned off the light when they left a room, it would make a HUGE impact. I would like to see some government legislation to make shops etc turn off their lights, tvs, displays, etc at the end of each day.

Also, when you log off later, make sure you turn your computer off at the plug. You might not realise it, thinking you have "shut down", but there is STILL power going into it. I didn't realise this until I bought a new PC last year and saw the green light still glowing out of the back of the bloody thing!!

This goes for all appliances - lamps, TV, video, clocks, ANYTHING electrical. Switch them off at the plug, you'll save money on electricity bills AND help to save the planet. See, it's not all bad, is it!?

I started doing that a couple years ago...although I have to say, it was for less than altruistic reasons. I did it to save some money. Saving money also motivated me to wash dishes by hand (without the water running), switch to compact florescents, and upgrade the insulation on our house. Our latest estimate is that we save between $100 and $300 a month.

And frankly, I'm tired of walking into businesses and either sweltering in the winter, or freezing in the summer. I shouldn't have to bring a winter coat into the movie theater in the middle of July.

Mine is already at 65. Don't you think 62 is a bit cool ? What's yours set to ? So far in 125 years, the earth has warmed by 1 degree. How can you say we'll be dead in 30 years ?

We already keep out house as cold as we dare. I'm a jumper and fleece man around the house !

No idea what the actual number is, its just cold, thats all we need to know.

I appreciate your suggestion, but it would also be worth pointing out about planes to us all. Heating is often necessary. Most flights are TOTALLY unnecessary and have more impact.

OK, you mean well and I applaud you for it, but in the scheme of things this doesn't make a diddly squat of difference, I have travelled all over the world and the pollution from emerging country's is scary! turning off your TV or DVD makes so small a difference its not worth bothering about. Also, most of the global warming is nature, and you can't tame that, I do my bit, my conscience is clear,

You release carbon dioxide every time you exhale. You want to save the world quit breathing.
