I am wondering about this, I'm not sure if there is any good in it for the people of Appalachia. Is there?

Here in the Uk, we have a overcrowding problem in our jails and supposidly the government want us to switch to renewable source of power. So why don't we get those Prisoners to produce power for the rest of the country? can Anyone come up with ideas as too how though?

I live in a small town and the town charges for recycling, however the recycling truck hardly ever shows up, and we have to call them days after supposed pick up. Paper and cardboard fly all over, and we get charged for pick up. The pick up days are supposed to be garbage days, but the recycyling truck rarely shows up. We have to wash out cans or course, and pack our paper or cardboard evenly.
We get charged for this NON service. I am getting real ticked, and am thinking of getting a petition signed by my neighbors and friends. Why be charged for something that we actually have to work a bit harder for, and it doesn't happen? I'd rather toss it all in the trash, that we also pay for.
Your thoughts?

What is more economical? I've heard it takes more energy turning a light on and off, and it would be better just leaving it on. Is there a rule of thumb?

I am trying to set up guidelines and a point system and a "going green" contest for a school and its students and families. Teaching how to do the environmentally minded things would be part of it, and then points for ideas implemented. I am trying to compose a list of ideas; trying to figure how to assign points; and what to have as awards. Many ideas would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you!!

My husband works on the commercial wind turbines. We get to read all sort of interesting articles/magazines put out for those who work in the wind turbine industry.

They now have a working prototype of a wind turbine that not only produces energy, but also produces hydrogen. Of course this is on a wind turbine based in the ocean. The prototype is near Denmark.

Wind turbines generate power via the wind. The power is then trasmitted down power lines, and into the power grid. Sometimes wind turbines are generating too much power for the power lines to be able to accept, because the wind is very strong that day.

Now instead of that power being wasted, it's being used at the wind turbine in the ocean to make hydrogen. There is also of course a holding tank for the hydrogen as part of that wind turbine now.

The plan is to have a lot of these hydrogen producing wind turbines in place, and have a boat go out and pick up the "free" hydrogen.

Thoughts, opinions?

A study carried out by the NOAA has reaffirmed a link between the droughts that have plagued many parts of the U.S. and climate change...this study has posited that droughts may in fact be aggravating climate change by hindering the uptake of millions of tons of carbon dioxide.

Using NOAA's new atmospheric monitoring and modeling system, CarbonTracker, lead scientist Andy Jacobson of the University of Colorado found that the amount of carbon dioxide absorbed by soil and vegetation plunged from an average of 650m metric tons a year to 330m metric tons. The culprit, according to Jacobson and his colleagues, is the drought that swept across close to 45% of North America in 2002.

What do you make of this finding? Perhaps another positive feedback that climate models have not taken into account, indicating once again that global warming predictions are too conservative?

With all the international bickering going on, it occured to me that its the holidays that we americans waste the most. If we weren't so flagarant with all the holiday lights, both individually (with our home lawn displays) & commercially (the displays around retailers & community centers.

Wouldn't we make at least a dent in the amount of wasted electricity we use this holiday season?

Displays don't have to waste electricity, just those with little creativity or lacking in common environmental sense.
Its bad enough I have to pay $4 a gallon for my honda.

Will you email your city council person & your senators to do something to cut the waste in this country this holiday season?

Global Warming melts the polar ice, causing a huge flow of fresh water which causes the Gulf Stream and the Kuroshio Current to stop warming Northern Europe and the Northern Pacific. Subsequently, the Northern Hemisphere actually gets colder, causing the northern ice pack to reform, stopping the flow of fresh water, whereupon the to major currents restart, returning things back to about where they are now?

Could it be that the GW computer modelers don't actually want that result and the assumptions they enter (all models have to make assumptions) prevent that outcome? Or could it be that computer models just simply don't have the ability to model that complex a scendario (my guess)?

I am conducting a survey for our school project. So it would be very helpful if you provide me with your educational level, experience, background and age.

HFC is an alternative of CFCs in refrigerators and air conditioners and it doesn't harm ozone layer. But HFCs are greenhouse gases.

CFC substitues such as propane, isobutane and butane are extremely flammable.

Every compound has its risks. Do you think it was reasonable to ban CFCs when its alternatives also have enough risks?

A regular light bulb is "inefficient" , The bulk of that inefficientcy is heat.

I live in Canada, the bulk of my light usage is in the winter.
Any home built in the last 20 years has excellent insulation.
Thus any energy saved by installing cfcs is offset by more Natural gas usage heating the home. What do you think?

Some people (damn long hairs, a.k.a Hippies) go on and on and on...and on...about how global warming is going to make it difficult for future generations to get to Argos on a Saturday and collect the dole cheque each week because the rising sea levels as a result of Global Warming will flood all the roads blah blah blah.

But surely tackling these problems caused by Global Warming will keep the future generations in jobs i.e boat making, conservation, flood defences, lifeguarding and Tea Towel manufacture? Will it not?

This link is to a web page which lists the "media stories ascribing the cause of everything under the sun to GLOBAL WARMING."

So my question is this - is there anything they missed?

A few favorites -
Atlantic LESS Salty / Atlantic MORE Salty
Business Opportunities / Business Risks

Oh here's a good one - Circumcision in Decline (???)

And the ever popular "Earth to Explode"

So, has anyone got a list of things NOT caused by "Global Warming?"

Here's an article that shows that a man was fined $1,000 from the State and $1,000 from the Federal governments for running his 1981 diesel Mercedes on biofuels.

Since politicians are running for office on promoting energy independence, why don't they repeal the laws that punish independent researchers?

Or is congress tied to the interest of big oil?
