I think it is quite odd that trash haulers like BFI and Waste Management ask their customers to recycle and charge them for this recycling, especially when they in turn make money on those items. They should actually be giving money to customers for their recycling which in turn would be used as incentive. Does anyone agree?

In 2008, I plan to become more enviornmentally conscious. I already recycle, but I want to really reduce my use of plastics. I want to do this by purchasing canvas bags to carry my groceries home. Are there certain ones that work better than others? I buy a lot of fresh produce, so I'll need something that can clean up easily in the wash but is also sturdy. Any links and pix you can send me are much appreciated!
Happy New Year!
:-D
btw- I'm not picky as far as color or design. As long as it functions well, I'm good.

I want to start an eco-friendly club at my school, the only problem is, I won't have any adults help, but the school lets kids run their own clubs at school, and we have many empty classrooms (my middle school used to be a highschool, so we have tons of space). I want to do things to help the enviroment, but I need some advice on what to do because I don't want to act all leader-like saying what we have to do and when, and all I can think of doing is cleaning up trash around the perimeter of the school and the woods across the street (if I can get an adults help), and picking up the recycling from the bins in classrooms, anything else? By the way, I'm only in 7th grade.

I'm looking for simple information such as:

How much chemical energy is in a barrel of petroleum?

How much solar energy can be captured by any means per square mile? If you can compare photo-voltaic vs. ethanol vs. bio-diesel vs. heating water to power a dynamo, that would be EXCELLENT.

When solar energy is converted what portion comes from visible light, what portion from infrared and what portion from ultraviolet?

I'm asking a lot. If you don't have the answer, possibly you can suggest a forum or organization which has this info.

Thanks.

45 x 80 shop on my farm/ranch. I have found panels to run me +/- 30,000 and don't power much more than the shop- I can't sell back to grid and recoup investment. I have heard of solar paint?. wind seems cost prohibitive as well

Scientists make cars that run on water.
Certain company frotment buy up their patents and very soon offers them vast sums of money to stop experimenting and publicizing their plans.
Suddenly there are MIB, death threats to family, or they vanish without a trace.

When will people wake up to the reality of the world we are living in. The oceans are the worlds biggest reserve of untapped energy. Go figure

I have been saving all of my clean plastic household waste so that I could recycle it. I also saved all of the wrapping paper and other paper items from Christmas so that I could recycle them. Today I went to the recycling centre and was told to put the paper into the 'Burnable' facility, and the plastic into the 'Non Burnable' facility. There were facilities for plastic bottles, newspapers and magazines and cardboard, which is great, but nothing for other plastic household waste or paper. How can I recycle these?

So far I have heard reasons why each one (ethanol, hydrogen, solar, and whatever else) won't be able to replace oil. What do you guys think?

Everything else is based on usage or amount...our food, cell phones, gas, electricity, water, even my trash is less if I use the smaller trash cans...
Why are clothes the exception?
If I use 1/4 the material, shouldn't I get a discount?

There is a "Garbage To Energy" plant near my home, and someone trying to 'go green' was concerned that the plumes of smoke rising from the smokestacks were just creating more pollution and could potentially be more harmful to the environment.

How many people would be interested in participating in "A Day Without Cars"? This is a non-profit website organization that has been running since 2006 with hardly any participation.

The first Saturday of each month is titled A Day Without Cars, and when you log onto the website, you can fill out a form, basically a pledge, that you will not use a car on that day.

This adds your name to an archive, and a participant map, so it is easy to see where participants are located, etc.

Please check out the website, and submit your comments, suggestions, concerns, etc. below. Thanks!
